Pancake House Riyadh

There are a lot of things I like about Thursdays morning in Riyadh. One of them is the absence of a lot of people in the street and restaurants offering brunches. So imagine my surprise when my friends and I walked in to a full house in The Pancake House?s family section. I don?t normally go immediately to newly opened restaurants because they?re still in their soft opening stage but I figured I?ll make an exception for this one since there?s a scarcity of breakfast and brunch places in the city.

The family section of The Pancake House is at the second floor. The ambiance is perfect for a weekend morning when having a cup of coffee in a sunlit room is the only thing that will get you out of bed. The decors are simple but elegant. There are big tables for the families and round ones for smaller groups of diners.

The interesting thing about The Pancake House is you?d think they?ll just serve pancakes and waffles because of its name but they offer more than the usual breakfast fare. You can order any thing on their menu at 9 in the morning! But being there for the morning food, my friends and I settled for the usual pancakes, waffles, and omelets. We added in a sampler of fajita, onion rings, and squid rings to insert something new. Cups of cappuccinos were our choice for perk-me-uppers. You?ll probably be weirded out when I say that I did not enjoy the pancake. Without the syrup, which my friends and I generously poured on top of our stack, we wouldn?t know what we?re eating. The pancake was bland and unremarkable; almost like ordinary bread. Smiling at us from our table was the round waffle topped with eggs, bacon, and sausage. As much as I want to tell you I enjoyed eating the smiley, I couldn?t because it was ordinary too. The waffle was crunchy but airy. The saving grace of the meal was the steak omelet filled with bits of beef and ingredients. Every bite is packed with savory flavors. I could finish the whole omelet on my own; a feat I rarely do on other resto?s omelet. The sampler was a welcome addition. The fajitas were nice and light and the rings were crispy and tasty. I can say that our first meal in The Pancake House was still enjoyable; the breakfast food was subtle and smooth with a kick of strong flavors.

My reluctance of going to newly-opened restaurants was a little bit founded here especially when our food took quite some time to arrive and the people in our nearby tables kept on complaining. The waiters were all over the place confused on who to serve and answer first. They made a mistake in billing us; swiping my friend?s card twice so we paid twice. But we?re still giving them a chance because the manager?s and staff?s friendliness and helpfulness made up for it. There was effort in putting their best foot forward; it wasn?t just executed properly now maybe because like me, they were surprised that the Riyadh weekend morning crowd has grown. I?ll give them a few months to exit their soft opening stage and step into the mainstream-dining scene with tastier all-day breakfast food and faster, more efficient service. I?ll be in their doorstep (at the back) two months from now to try their yummy-looking sandwiches, which the ladies on the table beside us ordered.

Revenge film paints bleak picture of rural China (Reuters)

VENICE, Italy (Reuters) ? New film "People Mountain People Sea" paints a bleak picture of rural China in a story about Lao Tie and his quest for revenge in the absence of state justice.

Directed by Beijing-born Cai Shangjun, the movie is the "surprise" at this year's Venice film festival, where the main competition lineup is traditionally expanded by one late entry.

The competition now comprises 23 movies.

In 2006 Jia Zhangke, also from China, was the surprise entry at the world's oldest film festival and went on to win the coveted Golden Lion for best picture.

His "Still Life" similarly dealt with the plight of ordinary Chinese who have been bypassed by the economic "miracle" that dominates Western headlines.

"People Mountain People Sea" is based on a true story in which a band of brothers hunted down their sibling's killer.

Cai reduces the brothers to a single character Lao played by Chen Jianbin, who goes in search of his brother's murderer realizing the police will never pursue the case.

The impoverished peasant visits the city where he meets his estranged wife and son and ends up in an illegal mine in remote China where the killer has gone into hiding.

"When we were young, in China in the 1970s there was a song we were all very familiar with -- the Internationale," Cai told Reuters in an interview in Venice.

"There is a part in the song in which the lyrics go 'no savior from on high delivers, no faith have we in prince or peer'," he added, speaking through a translator.

"This interested me because I found that when in need no one can really rely on finding help through the official processes or from laws. Justice needs to be found by oneself. I feel there is a connection (between the film and) the current society of China."

The mine scenes are particularly hard-hitting in their portrayal of difficult and dangerous working conditions and unscrupulous owners treating their employees as slaves.

One miner involved in a fight is executed in front of his colleagues.

Cai said he was attracted to his taciturn character Lao, who, rather than meekly suffer injustice and abuse decides his own destiny in the end.

"Facing the final shackles, he does not choose silence, but to fight with his life and to use violence against violence," the director said.

Jumping gene's preferred targets may influence genome evolution

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2011) ? The human genome shares several peculiarities with the DNA of just about every other plant and animal. Our genetic blueprint contains numerous entities known as transposons, or "jumping genes," which have the ability to move from place to place on the chromosomes within a cell.

An astounding 50% of human DNA comprises both active transposon elements and the decaying remains of former transposons that were active thousands to millions of years ago before becoming damaged and immobile. If all of this mobile and formerly mobile DNA were not mysterious enough, every time a plant, animal or human cell prepares to divide, the chromosome regions richest in transposon-derived sequences, even elements long deceased, are among the last to duplicate. The reason for their delayed duplication, if there is one, has eluded biologists for more than 50 years.

New research led by Carnegie's Allan Spradling and published online this week by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences provides potential insight into both these enigmas.

The scientists used the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, one of the premier "model" organisms for studying genome structure and gene function. They focused on one particular transposon, called the P element, which has an unsurpassed ability to move that has stimulated its widespread use by Drosophila researchers.

Remarkably, P elements have only been present in Drosophila melanogaster for about 80 years, at which time they were acquired from the genome of a distantly related fruit fly species by an unknown process. P elements remain highly "infective" today. Adding just one copy to the genome of one fly causes all the flies in a laboratory population with which it breeds to acquire 30 to 50 P elements within a few generations. The original goal of the Spradling team's research was not to understand how transposons spread or genomes evolve, but something much simpler: To learn why P elements insert at some locations in the genome but not in others.

Spradling and his colleagues, who oversee the NIH-funded Drosophila "Gene Disruption Project" used a database containing more than 50,000 genomic sites where P elements have inserted. They built this exceptional database over the last 20 years.

P elements insert into DNA very selectively. Nearly 40% of new jumps occur within just 300 genes and always near the beginning of the gene. But the genes seemed to have nothing in common. When these sites were compared to data about the Drosophila genome, particularly recent studies of Drosophila genome duplication, the answer became clear. What many P insertion sites share in common is an ability to function as starting sites or "origins" for DNA duplication. This association between P elements and the machinery of genome duplication suggested that they can coordinate their movement with DNA replication.

Spradling and his team propose that P elements -- and likely other transposons as well -- use a replication connection to spread more rapidly through genomes. These elements would only transpose after replicating, and then preferentially insert themselves into portions of DNA that have not yet become activated. This would allow them to duplicate twice rather than just once during the genome duplication cycle.

If the elements get a late start, however, only the last segments of the chromosome to duplicate will be left for their second duplication. This explains tendency of such regions to be transposon-rich. However, the researchers found that two other Drosophila transposons, known as piggyBac and Minos, do not insert at replication origins, so this mechanism is far from universal. Furthermore, Spradling cautioned that it is particularly difficult to experimentally test hypotheses about evolution.

"By gaining insight into one specific transposon's movements, we may have begun to glimpse mechanisms that have profoundly influenced genome evolution for nearly all animals" Spradling commented.

Spradling's co-authors on the paper are Hugo Bellen of Baylor College of Medicine and Roger Hoskins of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Funding for this research was provided in part by the National Institutes of Health.

NYC mayor: NYPD not unfair in surveillance (AP)

NEW YORK ? New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the New York Police Department's surveillance of the city's ethnic neighborhoods had not unfairly targeted any group in an effort to root out possible terror connections, and compared it to screening kids for measles.

An Associated Press investigation found that NYPD dispatched undercover officers into ethnic communities to monitor daily life and scrutinized more than 250 mosques and Muslim student groups in the years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Bloomberg refused to comment directly on the details of the AP's investigation. Later in an interview he said: "If there is a community where the crime rate is very high, to not put more cops in that community is ridiculous. If you want to look for cases of measles, you'll find a lot more of them among young people. That's not targeting young people to go see whether they have measles or not."

The mayor's comments Wednesday offered a revealing glimpse into how Bloomberg believes the city's law enforcement officials should walk what he says is a fine line ? protecting the city against attack while upholding constitutional protections.

"I believe we should do what we have to do to keep us safe. And we have to be consistent with the Constitution and with people's rights. We live in a dangerous world, and we have to be very proactive in making sure that we prevent terrorism," he had said earlier in the day.

A number of advocates have questioned whether the NYPD's policies have gone too far as the department put many innocent people under scrutiny while hunting for terrorists. Several Muslim civil rights groups and a New York congresswoman have urged the Department of Justice to investigate the department for what critics see as racial profiling.

Bloomberg said no one should generalize about any group, but authorities must respond to the threat of criminal activity.

"What I find disgraceful is the automatic assumption that (in) any one religious group, everybody's a terrorist. That's not true. It is true that you can go to certain places where people give sermons and a lot of them are anti-American. But that doesn't mean that everybody is a terrorist," he said.

"But if you've got a clergyperson preaching anarchy, do you really think the police department shouldn't try to send somebody and listen and see if they're trying to foment a riot? You can't wait till the riot's on the streets," he said.

The AP's investigation found that the NYPD Intelligence Division maintained a list of 28 countries that, along with "American Black Muslim," it considered to be "ancestries of interest."

New York City's Muslims ? a group that the mayor said tends to be well-educated and entrepreneurial ? are supportive of police presence, he said.

"I think most Muslims want police protection. They don't want their kids ... falling off the ... train and going down the wrong path," the mayor said.

According to AP's investigation, the NYPD Intelligence Division used its list of "ancestries of interest" to dispatch a secret team of undercover officers into ethnic communities to eavesdrop and monitor daily life. The officers, known as rakers, filed daily reports on what they overheard.

The department also used undercover officers and informants to scrutinize more than 250 mosques and Muslim student groups, according to documents and interviews with people involved in the program. Mosques were singled out for further investigation based on suspected criminal activity but also for conservative Islamic beliefs, the documents show. At least one business was flagged for having a devout clientele.

All of this was done with unusually close help from the CIA, in a relationship that at times blurred the line between domestic and foreign spying.

Also Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a former FBI agent in Chicago, said he wasn't disturbed by the NYPD's practice of monitoring certain ethnic or religious communities when tracking terrorists. "I am opposed to racial profiling, I think it doesn't work, but there are things called criminal profiling," Rogers explained.

"If you're going to catch an Irish mob bank robbery crew ... you're normally going to show up in places where the Irish-connected folks are going to hang out," Rogers said. "In the FBI, we used to say that's a clue."

Rogers said the NYPD was doing nothing wrong when it hired former CIA employees to help it build its program, but said he would support a review.

Bloomberg said he believes the public is increasingly willing to give up aspects of their privacy in exchange for added safety. New facial-recognition technologies will soon make it possible to track exactly who is walking down the street, he said, adding that he believes "we're going in that direction."

"As the world gets more dangerous, people are willing to have infringements on their personal freedoms that they would not before," Bloomberg said.

Apple blasted for alleged pollution by suppliers

(AP) ? Apple is defending itself against a fresh barrage of criticism from Chinese environmental activists over alleged pollution by the manufacturers who make its iconic iPhones, iPads and other products.

In a report issued Wednesday, a group of nongovernmental organizations accused the technology giant of violating its own corporate responsibility standards by using suppliers it said its investigations found are violating the law and endangering public health by discharging heavy metals and other toxins.

Responding to the report, Apple said Thursday that it was committed to "driving the highest standards of social responsibility" in its supply chain.

"We require that our suppliers provide safe working conditions, treat workers with dignity and respect, and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes wherever Apple products are made," it said.

In a letter to the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, the Beijing-based NGO that spearheaded the report, Apple said it took such concerns seriously but had found discrepancies in the document.

It also proposed a "private conference call" with the institute, which responded by asking that other sponsors of the report be included in any dialogue.

Policing supply chains is a headache for big brand name companies, given the countless scandals over labor, environmental, safety and quality problems brought on by outsourcing to myriad factories in China and elsewhere in the developing world.

The latest report explores in more detail findings of an earlier one that took Cupertino, California-based Apple and other big electronics makers to task for alleged violations of labor and environmental standards.

It says Apple is spreading pollution through its supply chain and names seven facilities owned by five separate suppliers for specific problems, mainly with disposal of hazardous materials such as copper, nickel and cyanide.

Staff at two of those factories near Shanghai, Kaedar Electronics and Unimicron (Kunshan), said their managers were not available to comment Thursday.

Toxic waste and noxious smells from factories are a fact of life for many living in the heavily populated Shanghai region, and often standards demanded by residents are much higher than those allowed for industries.

An official with the local government in Kunshan said that the situation had improved from several years ago with the installation of a wastewater treatment plant, and that the Kaedar factory was expected to move to another area by 2013.

"It's true that it smells here, but the level of pollution is actually better than national standards," said the official, who asked to be identified only by his surname, Wang. "But when the wind blows, the smell is just unavoidable," he said.

The report also named Taiwan-owned Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which assembles Apple's iPhones and iPads in enormous factories in several mainland locations.

It said Foxconn's factory in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan was emitting irritating gases resulting from metals surface processing, and authorities responsible for treating hazardous waste from its massive facility in the southern boomtown of Shenzhen had discharged pollutants exceeding legal limits.

Another suspected Apple supplier, Ibiden Electronics (Beijing), a Japanese maker of printed wiring boards, was discharging several dozen tons a day of sludge containing hazardous chemicals, the report said.

In its own social responsibility report, Ibiden says it exercises "rigorous control" over chemicals and is seeking to reduce use of those that are toxic.

Apple's latest supplier responsibility report acknowledges weaknesses, especially in suppliers' handling of hazardous substances, air emissions and environmental permits and reporting. The company says it is addressing those issues in its audit process, and has made progress.

The company had audited 288 facilities as of December 2010. Because Apple does not publicize its suppliers, public information about specific manufacturers serving them is hard to come by.

It can save we a lot if we do a small credentials check upon a association which develops as well as publishes a diversion we intend to play. Some diversion developers fraud their consumers by charity them dubious in-game benefits.

Michael Arrington from TechCrunch.com said, "Users have been offering in-game banking if they pointer up to embrace a giveaway guidance CD from Video Professor. The user is told they compensate zero solely a $10 shipping charge. But a brilliant print, upon a opposite page from checkout, tells them they have been unequivocally removing a total set of CDs as well as will be billed $189.95 unless they lapse them."

Making certain which you're traffic with a creditable association is no overwhelming task. Take a time sense some-more about opposite companies. You'll never know when you, or someone we know, competence tumble plant to a small of a industry's many deceit scammers.
