VatorNews - Businesses still not taking advantage of social media

Social media, for better or for worse, has completely changed the Internet. It has changed the way people interact with each other, and the way companies interact with their customers. It has even altered the way celebrities interact with their fans, creating the sense of closeness that, in all honesty, is probably an illusion.

One thing that social media has not seemed to do, at least not yet, is impact how employers interact with their employees.

According to a new survey conducted by Stanford University?s?Rock Center for Corporate Governance, the?Center for Leadership Development and Research?at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and?The Conference Board,?titled ?What Do Corporate Directors and Senior Managers Know about Social Media?? less?than a third of companies today use social media to support their corporate strategy and risk management practices.

180 senior executives and corporate directors of North American public and private companies were surveyed, and revealed a ?disconnect between companies? understanding of social media and the actions they are taking to apply it to their business.?

The report states that, while 90% of the surveyed executives and directors said they understood how social media could impact their company, few put it into practice. Only 32% of the companies were monitoring social media to detect risk to their activities.?

And a scant 14% used metrics from social media to improve employee performance.

Half of the companies surveyed don?t collect any information from social media, and only 24% of senior managers, and 8% of company directors, get reports with this information.

A little more than half, 59%, of the companies use social media to interact with their customers and less than half, 49%, use it to advertise. When it comes to using social media for research, 35% use it for researching customers and 30% use social media to research competitors, research new products and services, or communicate with employees and other stakeholders.

Though they are not taking advantage of all that social media can do for their professional lives, it?s not that the executives surveyed are not familiar with social media. On the contrary, 65% of them use social media for their own personal usage. And of those 65%, 80% of them have LinkedIn account, and 68% use Facebook.

?We know that executives and board members are using social media. However, familiarity with social media is just not translating into systemic use at their companies,? Professor?David F. Larcker?of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and lead author of the study, in a statement.

?The majority of those we surveyed don?t have social media guidelines in place at their companies, haven?t had a social media expert consult with their company, and don?t have systems in place for gathering key information. They are putting themselves at serious risk by not taking action.??

So what do the authors of the study suggest?

That these executives should assess their current capabilities with social media, and determine how it can fit into their strategy and business model. They should develop a formal set of guidelines for employees and directors when it comes to social media, and should also consider a monitoring or ?listening? tool.

They can use social media to map their key performance indicators, and determine risk factors, the report says.

AUO builds cellphone display with 'world's thinnest border' -- Engadget

AUO Presents World's Narrowest Border on 4.46-inch Panel Integration Technology

Ultra high resolution, ultra wide viewing angle and super narrow border technologies to reveal a whole new world of vision for mobile device displays

AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO), today announced the world's narrowest border (*) on its 4.46-inch cell phone and touch panel integration technology. AUO's proprietary super narrow border technology and low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) method are applied to reduce the border width to just 1mm when touch panel is placed on the module surface, allowing the screen to appear in its largest at the cell phone's display area. In addition, AMOLED, IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) and AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) technologies are being developed by AUO to constantly drive the trends for ultra high resolution, ultra wide viewing angle and super narrow border technologies.

"As portable smart devices become prevalent and the size of mobile displays grow larger, audio-video entertainment, interactive games and content downloading have emerged at the top of consumers' demand list," said Mr. T.K. Wu, AUO's VP & GM of Mobile Solutions Business Group. "AUO proactively develops the latest technologies including AMOLED and IGZO and excels by introducing ultra high resolution, ultra wide viewing angle and super narrow border technologies. Mobile devices in the future will become lighter and smaller, color and image quality will also be all the more impressive, offering customers even more innovative solutions to choose from."

AUO has successfully developed AHVA panels ranging from 3 inches to 15.6 inches and has included them to a full array of mobile device applications, such as digital camera, smartphone, e-reader, car display, tablet and Ultrabook. AUO's 4.97-inch Full HD AHVA Mobile Display, which has entered mass production, is made with LTPS process and has full HD resolution of 1080x1920 (443ppi). The display is to satiate consumers' ultimate quest for exquisite image quality.

Industry-Leading Ultra High Resolution, Super Narrow Border and Ultra Wide Viewing Angle Technologies

AUO is the first to present the world's narrowest border on its 4.46-inch cell phone and touch panel integration technology, with a high resolution of HD720 and the width of mere 1mm from display area to touch panel border, maximizing the display area available. Image and video content appear larger in frame size, and also better in quality.

With the resolution of current OLED panels ranging from 200 to 300ppi, AUO reveals 4.65-inch AMOLED panel technology which employs the Company's proprietary pixel design with resolution as high as 317ppi. The panel is capable of exhibiting sharper quality for texts, and refined and realistic image property. Meanwhile, power could be saved to prolong the OLED lifetime.

AUO is also introducing its ultra-slim high resolution 10-inch panel technology with application to tablets. The IGZO method is adopted to achieve a high resolution of 2560x1600, which delicately demonstrates the fineness and details of the image. With transmittance increased by 12% and thickness of the backlight unit reduced by 60% (as compared to conventional models), the panel is only 1.5mm thick and saves more power. The features herald the trend towards power-saving slim displays with high resolution.

Most U.S. Drones Openly Broadcast Secret Video Feeds

www.wired.com:

Four years after discovering that militants were tapping into drone video feeds, the U.S. military still hasn?t secured the transmissions of more than half of its fleet of Predator and Reaper drones, Danger Room has learned. The majority of the aircraft still broadcast their classified video streams ?in the clear? ? without encryption. With a minimal amount of equipment and know-how, militants can see what America?s drones see.

Second-ranked Oregon dispatches Colorado 70-14

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? The Oregon Ducks spent all last week saying they weren't looking past Colorado to next weekend's Pac-12 showdown at USC.

So after the second-ranked Ducks easily dispatched the Buffaloes 70-14 on Saturday at Autzen Stadium, it was OK to finally talk about the Trojans.

Well, sort of. USC was still just another "faceless opponent" to undefeated Oregon.

"It's a big game, but we treat every game the same," said redshirt freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota, who threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns against Colorado.

The Trojans took some of the drama away from next week's game at L.A. Coliseum, losing at Arizona 39-36 later Saturday afternoon.

Oregon players said they would revel in their victory over Colorado for another day before shifting their focus to the Trojans.

Kenjon Barner rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, while De'Anthony Thomas rushed for another score and added a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown against the overmatched Buffs. Most of Oregon's offensive starters were pulled by the midway point of the second quarter.

"When you've got Kenjon, De'Anthony, Marcus, you really force people to defend everyone," coach Chip Kelly said.

The Ducks (8-0, 5-0 Pac-12) built a 56-0 lead by halftime and their 70 points were the most they'd ever scored against a conference opponent. It was Oregon's 11th straight overall victory dating to a 38-35 loss at home to USC last season.

Colorado freshman Christian Powell rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns for the Buffaloes (1-7, 1-4), who lost their fourth straight.

"Yes, they're a good team. They're fast, they're just what everybody would expect. They're disciplined, they made a lot of plays, they're a great team," Powell said about the Ducks.

The Ducks piled up 617 yards in total offense, including 425 on the ground, and the Buffs simply could not keep up. Colorado went into the game ranked 112th in the nation on defense, allowing an average of 489 yards. Oregon had 447 by halftime.

Colorado has yielded at least 50 points in its last three games, including last weekend's 50-6 loss to USC.

"I've been saying it all week, they (the Ducks) have a great opportunity to hold that crystal ball at the end of the year," Colorado coach Jon Embree said.

Oregon scored twice at the start of the game ? on Barner's 1-yard run and Thomas' 9-yard run ? before Colorado's offense even got the ball. Mariota added a 5-yard scoring run then hit Bralon Addison with a 16-yard TD all before the first quarter ended.

Barner added a 24-yard scoring run before Thomas' stunning 73-yard punt return gave Oregon a 42-0 lead. The winding sprint to the endzone offered another glimpse of the sophomore's jaw-dropping speed.

"I'm not really one of those guys about stats," Thomas said. "I'm more about wins and being there for my team."

Mariota found Daryle Hawkins with a 7-yard touchdown pass before leaving the game with most of Oregon's other starters.

Backup Ducks quarterback Bryan Bennett added a touchdown on a 6-yard keeper before the break and Oregon's 56 points at halftime were its most since scoring 59 on New Mexico in 2010.

Powell had a 1-yard scoring run early in the third quarter to avoid the shutout for the Buffs, then added a 20-yard TD dash to narrow it to 56-14. Bennett answered with two keepers, from 3 and 17 yards out, for the final margin.

"Once we get everyone on the same page, it's hard to beat this team," Barner said.

Colorado coach Jon Embree started junior quarterback Jordan Webb before putting in sophomore Nick Hirschman. Webb completed seven of 11 passes for 31 yards, while Hirshman finished 7 of 16 for 64 yards.

While Oregon remained at No. 2 in the AP Top 25 this week, the Ducks dropped to No. 4 in the BCS standings, which prompted coach Chip Kelly to quip that perhaps the computers were shut down at night before the Ducks played.

Before Saturday, it was looking as though a victory against USC next weekend would go a long way toward proving that Oregon is worthy of higher standing. The Nov. 3 game at the Coliseum has been touted by many as the most important Pac-12 game of the season ? or at least a preview of the conference championship game.

The Trojans fell to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-12 with the loss to the Wildcats.

Last year the then-No. 18 Trojans came to Autzen Stadium and won, dropping the Ducks from No. 4 to No. 9 in the polls and effectively dashing any hopes at a national title bid. USC is considered Oregon's biggest threat again this season.

Website (un) Management - UK Business Forums

Im not sure if Im posting this in the right section but here goes.

I must be the only business owner that does not 'look after' their own website! There Ive said it. How unprofessional am I?

I am trying to figure out how I 'take over' my website.

I am obviously naive and have left the online side of our business to be run by our web site designer. We have since parted company.

Im sure with the right tools I can achieve better results from the web. So far I have set up Google Places and recently Google+. I have a facebook and twitter account. I have also set up an adwords campaign. Im sure Im missing something as we still rely heavily on local trade directories and local magazines. I have used the services of Scott Chapman from here to re-write the copy so Im really happy with that.

I have just tried to verify our website on Webmaster Tools but was unable to be verified. So now Ive come to a halt and am struggling.

Am I missing something? Or am I trying to do something only a professional can do?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

NYSE to trade electronically Monday, shut floor

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange and the NYMEX are shutting their trading floors in New York Monday as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Big Apple.

But trading will continue electronically on both exchanges.

NYSE Euronext said Sunday it is putting in place its contingency plans beginning Monday and will announce later when the trading floor will reopen.

The New York Mercantile Exchange, a commodity futures exchange, also will be shutting on Monday its trading floor which is located in a mandatory evacuation zone. The CME Group, which owns NYMEX, said all electronic markets will open at their regularly scheduled times.

The moves come as Hurricane Sandy causes the shutdown of transportation systems throughout the region. Governor Andrew Cuomo said New York City's subways and buses will shut down Sunday evening. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered residents to evacuate some low-lying areas Sunday and said city public schools will close Monday.

Trading can still go on even without people yelling orders to buy and sell across the floor of the exchange because many orders on the NYSE are already handled electronically. On Monday, securities normally handled on the NYSE will shift to the purely electronic NYSE Arca.

The servers that handle all of the exchange's transactions are housed in Mahwah, N.J.

Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria.

Since the Great Depression, the longest suspension in trading at the NYSE occurred after the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when the exchange closed for four days.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph as of Sunday afternoon, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard. It was expected to hook left toward the mid-Atlantic coast and come ashore late Monday or early Tuesday, most likely in New Jersey, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.

Forecasters said the monster combination could bring close to a foot of rain, a potentially lethal storm surge and punishing winds extending hundreds of miles outward from the storm's center. It could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.
