GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) ? Mindy Sigg sat sobbing, listening to prosecutors tell a court that her 17-year-old son had confessed to the abduction and killing of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

While any mother would be devastated, there was an even more heartbreaking wrinkle for Sigg: She was the one who called police.

It was not the only high-profile case this week in which a mother made that painful choice. In New Jersey, Anita Saunders saw something on a Facebook page that led her to call police.

Her two sons, ages 15 and 17, are now charged with murdering 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale, a bike-lover who authorities said was lured to their home with the promise of new parts.

What does it feel like to turn in your child, knowing they could be sentenced to many years in prison? Surely, no one knows but those who've done it.

But a main motivation, according to one criminologist, is simply a desire to do the right thing.

"These are law-abiding people, pro-social people," said Kathleen Heide, professor of criminology at the University of South Florida. "And besides doing the right thing, the parents often want to get their children help."

What they often aren't aware of, though, are the full ramifications in terms of likely punishment.

"If these are cases of first- or second-degree murder, in most cases the kids will be charged as adults," Heide said. "This means they can be sentenced to life in prison."

In both cases, authorities are deciding whether to prosecute the suspects as adults.

Certainly not all parents are ready to turn in their kids. One high-profile case from the 1990s, in fact, resulted in strains between the United States and Israel, when a father helped his teenage son escape this country after a particularly brutal murder in Maryland. The son, Samuel Sheinbein, confessed and is now serving a 24-year sentence in Israel ? a lighter term than he likely would have gotten in the United States.

Mindy Sigg made a different decision. Reached by phone on Wednesday, she told The Associated Press: "I made the phone call, and he turned himself in. That's all I have to say." Then she broke down in tears.

Her son Austin Reed Sigg made his first court appearance Thursday in the death of Jessica and in a separate attack on a 22-year-old runner, who managed to break free, in May.

Prosecutors say he has confessed in both cases, and investigators have overwhelming DNA evidence against him. He was ordered held without bail; prosecutors are expected to formally charge him next week.

Sigg's father, Rob Sigg, issued a written statement Thursday commending his ex-wife's decision and asking for prayers and support for the Ridgeway family.

"This horrible event is a tragedy for both the families, as well as the community. I ask also for your prayers and support for Austin's mother, whose courageous act ? unimaginably painful for any parent ? has put this tragedy on the path to resolution," he said. "I am hopeful that as the legal process unfolds, the Ridgeway family may come to know peace."

Peg Claspell, who lives near the Siggs, said she was grateful to the mother for her decision and called it the "most loving, difficult thing."

"I can't imagine the pain for her, and she's in my prayers," Claspell said. "She has a long and difficult time ahead of her."

Claspell's husband, Tom, struggled when asked if he would turn in a child. "I can say yes, but I don't know if I would. It would be a very hard thing to do," he said, explaining it would depend on the severity of the crime.

In a case like this, "I probably would," he said.

In the New Jersey case, Justin Robinson, 15, and Dante Robinson, 17, have been charged with murder and other counts in the death of 12-year-old Autumn, whose body was found Monday stuffed in a recycling bin only blocks from her home in Clayton.

An autopsy found the seventh-grader suffered blunt force trauma consistent with strangulation.

The boys are due in court Friday for a hearing to determine if they will remain in custody.

What's rare about both cases, said Heide, the criminologist, is that boys of this age rarely kill girls, especially girls so young. "Usually boys this age kill other males, and in their own age cohort," she said.

Jessica disappeared three weeks ago after leaving her home in the Denver suburb of Westminster to walk to school. She never arrived. Her remains were found on Oct. 10. Sigg was taken into custody late Tuesday after police received the mother's phone call. He lived about a mile from Jessica.

Sigg wore a blue-green jail uniform and had a light goatee when he appeared in a heavily guarded courtroom in Golden.

Four of his family members were seated in the court, and they sobbed at times during the hearing.

When District Judge Ann Gail Meinster asked Sigg if a parent was present, he said "Yes" and looked toward his relatives. He then mostly sat with his head bowed.

Seven of Jessica's family members sat in the courtroom with their arms around each other. Sigg glanced in their direction just once.

Public defender Ryan Loewer had argued for setting bail for Sigg, saying he has no prior criminal history. Prosecutor Hal Sargent said Sigg had confessed and investigators had a strong case.

"There's DNA evidence, and the evidence is overwhelming," he said.

After the hearing, Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey said prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty for Sigg because he is a minor.

Storey said the law is unclear on whether Sigg could be sentenced to life in prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that the death penalty was unconstitutional for minors. Colorado law allows for life sentences for juveniles convicted of serious crimes, but it would be up to a judge to determine whether that's appropriate, Storey said.

Storey declined to discuss the possibility that Sigg might enter an insanity plea.

Former high school classmates painted a picture of Sigg as an intelligent teen who often wore black and complained about school but who would stay late sometimes to work on computers. Sigg was interested in mortuary science and was taking forensics classes, said Rachel Bradley, 17, who attended Standley Lake High School with him.

Sigg enrolled in August at Arapahoe Community College, which offers the state's only accredited mortuary science program. He didn't have enough credits yet to apply to that program.

Sigg had left Standley Lake High in July after finishing the 11th grade and later earned a GED. School officials don't know why he left.

Former schoolmate Sarah Morevec said Sigg had been bullied for having a high voice.

Strikes in mining sector cost S.Africa $1.1 bln

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Strikes hitting South Africa's platinum and gold mines have cost the continent's largest economy just over 10 billion rand so far this year, the National Treasury said on Thursday.

Output from the world's top platinum and major gold producer has been curtailed by months of labour unrest that have hit the sector responsible for about 6 percent of gross domestic product, raising concerns about growth prospects.

"Declining mining output and the spread of strike activity has depressed activity in related industries including manufacturing, logistics and services, with negative consequences for GDP," the Treasury said in its interim budget policy statement.

In the year to August, mining output fell by 3.3 percent, with production of platinum group metals 15.3 percent lower, although strong iron ore demand from China has helped offset some of the decline in the platinum, gold and coal sectors, it added.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who marginally cut the country's GDP forecast for the year to 2.5 percent from the 2.7 percent forecast in February, said it would take government some time to determine the full impact of the mining strife on growth.

"We will take that knock, recover from it and move on because life doesn't end now or next week. Life moves on," Gordhan said during a press conference ahead of delivering his three-year budget policy statement in parliament.

About 100,000 workers have downed tools for better pay since August in a wave of strikes that has sparked two credit downgrades and prompted questions about the relatively slow response of President Jacob Zuma's government.

Most of the strikes have been settled, either with pay raises well above inflation or with employers sacking - or threatening to sack - workers who walked out on wildcat strikes.

In the worst of the unrest, police shot dead 34 striking platinum miners at Lonmin's Marikana mine on August 16, in the bloodiest security incident since the end of apartheid in 1994.

Gulf Stream Shift Linked to Methane Gas Escaping from Seabeds

The new work could reinvigorate a debate on the risk of methane release from the oceans and whether destabilized hydrates make the continental slopes more unstable

Gulf Stream Sand is not the only thing on the move in the waters off the eastern United States ? a shift in the Gulf Stream is melting methane hydrate in sediments that could release methane gas. Image: David A. Harvey/National Geographic/Getty Images

Somewhere off the eastern coast of North Carolina, a frozen mixture of water and methane gas tucked in seabed sediments is starting to break down. Researchers blame a shifting Gulf Stream ? the swift Atlantic Ocean current that flows north from the Gulf of Mexico ? which is now delivering warmer waters to areas that had previously only experienced colder temperatures.

?We know methane hydrates exist here and, if warming continues, it can potentially lead to less stable sediments in this region,? says Matthew Hornbach, a marine geologist at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, who led the study that is published online today in Nature. The results suggest that the warmer temperatures are destabilizing up to 2.5 gigatons of methane hydrate along the continental slope of the eastern United States. This region is prone to underwater landslides, which could release the methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Whether that methane would make it to the atmosphere and worsen global warming is unclear, but scientists think that it is unlikely. ?We don?t need to worry about any huge blow of methane into the atmosphere,? says Carolyn Ruppel, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Rather, she says, Hornbach and his co-author Benjamin Phrampus, also of the Southern Methodist University, have uncovered a powerful new way to use data from the geological record to catch non-anthropogenic climate changes that are already happening.

Frozen zone
The authors' approach combines models of subsurface temperature dynamics with seismic images to directly detect the depth at which the methane hydrate is no longer stable and shifts from a frozen solid to free gas. Because hydrate formation is dependent on temperature, the position of the bottom of this frozen zone can be used to estimate subsurface temperature dynamics.

Using seismic data collected in 1977 to model where they expected the frozen methane to become gaseous in the western North Atlantic margin, they found that the observed interface between the frozen solid and the free gas was much deeper than predicted. After systematically checking every detail, the team ruled out several factors that could have explained their observations ? including sea-level changes, increased sedimentation rates or decreased heat flow through the sediments. They eventually realized that the only thing that could cause the discrepancy was that the water was cooler in the past. Phrampus ran the model again using data from much cooler waters 100 kilometers northwest of the Gulf Stream, and got an almost perfect fit.

Next, the authors modeled heat flow through the methane hydrate sediments in relation to time, and estimated that it would take around 5,000 years of warmer waters for all of the methane to sublimate and become gas. ?We don?t know where we are in the 5,000-year time frame, but our best approximation suggests we are 800 to 1,000 years in,? says Phrampus.

Trouble ahead?
This work promises to reinvigorate an ongoing debate over the risk of methane release from the oceans and whether destabilized hydrates make the continental slopes more unstable.

Curing Cancer One STEP at a Time | The Rockland County Times

Cancer patients honored at Light the Night Walk; 1,600 attend

STORY AND PHOTOS BY DIANA BIERMAN

Laurie Walser (center) and her team, "Laurie's Red Raiders"

On the evening of Sunday, October 21, approximately 1,600 people gathered at Nyack Memorial Park to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)?s Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter at their annual Light the Night Walk, honoring people battling or who?ve battled blood cancers. This was one of three walks held in both Rockland and Westchester counties.

Teams of coworkers, families and friends walked together in twilight holding illuminated balloons. White balloons symbolized survivors, red balloons were for supporters and gold were for those walking in memory of a loved one lost to a blood cancer. In addition, a remembrance ceremony, team banner contest, caregivers? recognition and fireworks display were also part of the evening?s events.

Light the Night participants ranged from families of local survivors and patients to corporate teams. One of the honored patients this year was Laurie Walser of Airmont, NY, an acute myeloid leukemia (AML) survivor.

In September of 2009, Laurie was on her way to the Nyack Street Fair when she fell and broke her arm. She was brought to the hospital, and, during a routine blood count, doctors soon realized her platelet count was significantly low, which led to her diagnosis of AML.

The Be Positives, walking in honor of Kerry Kelemen, and also the highest fundraising team in Rockland ever

It wasn?t long after that when Laurie began undergoing chemotherapy. ?Everyone had to help me do everything,? she said. ?I couldn?t even open a bottle of water.? But after months of treatment, Laurie soon got her stride back, and, in April of 2010, she was deemed cancer free.

?If I hadn?t fallen, it could?ve been months since I was diagnosed,? she explained. ?It was the best broken arm I?ve ever had!?

Waking with Laurie was her team called ?Laurie?s Red Raiders,? a homage to her job at North Rockland School District, where she works as a position assistant. ?The support of everyone is amazing,? Laurie said. ?I would not be here today without the support and prayers of all my family and friends.?

The most important lesson Laurie learned during her journey is that helping others, even when you?re struggling yourself, is the most rewarding thing you can do. She was so floored by her own support system that she presented a speech on 11 ways you can help a patient, which she compiled through her own experience. She discussed things like making the patient laugh, helping around the house and the importance of simply listening.

The other honored patient at the walk was Kerry Kelemen, of Thiells, NY, who lost her battle to AML in July of 2011. At the walk were many of Kerry?s friends and family on a team called ?Be Positive,? which was Kerry?s blood type?and also her motto in dealing with her diagnosis.

?She was a spitfire,? explained her sister, Tonia McGowan, walking with Be Positive, which was recognized as the highest fundraising team in Rockland ever. ?She was passionate about everything she did. From work, to family and friends, to love. She wasn?t afraid to take risks.?

Tonia McGowen, Kerry Kelemen's sister, and Dennis Kelemen, Kerry's father

Kerry was diagnosed in May of 2010 on her 24th birthday. She underwent two rounds of chemo in Canada and a bone marrow transplant in New York. ?[Her] rebellious spirit and willful determination helped her digest this unwanted birthday gift,? McGowan said. ?Her instant positive outlook helped to guide our family in dealing with this diagnosis.?

Her loved ones were not her only supporters through her journey, however. In fact, people who didn?t even know her were touched by her spirit. When Kerry adopted her motto, ?You fight for your life, because the fighter never quits; you make the most of the hand you?re dealt, because the quitter never wins,? from a Dropkick Murphy song, the band, which was her favorite, heard of her story and came to the hospital to play a concert in her room.

In addition, hockey player Adam Graves asked her to come to a game. Her Facebook page chronicling her fight for life gained more than 6,000 followers. Notes of encouragement and small gifts were always steadily delivered to her. ?She touched so many people,? McGowen said.

When the transplant regrettably failed and when she was unable to get back into remission, she married her husband Damien on the Staten Island Ferry, where they had their first date. Two months later, in July of 2011, Kerry passed away in her sleep.

But Kerry?s spirit will live on, just like the rest of the loved ones commemorated at the walk. ?These loved ones were an important part of our lives,? said Denise Raptoulis, LCSW, patient services manage at LLS. ?Although not with us physically, their spirit and our memories of them go on to guide and inspire us in our daily lives.?

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, based in White Plains, NY, is the world?s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. Funds raised from the Light The Night Walk provide significant support to these programs. Last year, the three Westchester/Hudson Valley walks included 7,000 walkers who collectively raised over $887,000.

iPad mini: Five reasons to buy one - News - Know Your Cell

Pre-orders for the iPad mini start this Friday, Oct. 26. Here are five benefits to buying one.?

1. Cost

While it sports a higher tag than its Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD rivals, it's still cheaper than Apple's full-sized tablets. Here's a quick price breakdown of the mini's six different configurations:

  • iPad mini, Wi-Fi only, 16 gigabytes of storage, $329
  • iPad mini, Wi-Fi only, 32 GB, $429?
  • iPad mini, Wi-Fi only, 64 GB, $529
  • iPad mini, Wi-Fi + Cellular, 16 GB, $459
  • iPad mini, Wi-Fi + Cellular, 32 GB, $559
  • iPad mini, Wi-Fi + Cellular, 64 GB, $659

2. Size?

It's portable, but at 7.9-inches it is still larger than its rivals.?The extra real estate is a plus on several counts, and the additional screen space doesn't exactly make for a bulky product. iPad mini still weighs significantly less than competing 7-inch tablets, and it's practically paper thin. As a bonus, the smaller size makes it girlfriend- and kid-friendly, so you can finally get your full-size iPad back.?

3. Lightning?

If you already own an iPhone 5, you'll be thrilled to know that iPad mini is equipped with the new port as well. Apple's fourth-generation full-size iPad will sport the Lightning port too, and will also come with a faster A6X chip. That said, if you're a first-time tablet buyer and you're already sold on Apple, you'll want to stick with one of these newer versions to ensure that your device is compatible with the latest accessories.?

4. iOS

If you're debating between the mini and an Android-based tablet, this is your take-it-or-leave-it factor. While our staff splits its time pretty evenly between these two operating systems, iOS always ends up with the most love. Why? Because it's consistent, efficient and generally more secure. Developers typically favor it, which means you get a better selection of apps and games (currently the iTunes Store offers roughly 700,000 combined for iPhone and iPad).?

5. Gifting?

If your loved ones have a tablet marked at the top of their holiday lists, iPad mini is your safest bet. While you'll be spending slightly more than you would on an Android-based tablet of similar size, you'll get some serious props for choosing the more popular brand. And you're still getting off cheaper than you would with Apple's full-size iPad. ? ?

Oil price drops below $87; pump prices down again

The price of oil fell to a three-month low Tuesday as big corporations cut earnings forecasts, raising concerns about economic growth and oil demand.

Benchmark oil dropped $1.98, or 2.3 percent, to finish at $86.67 per barrel in New York. Oil has lost about 6 percent since Thursday, the biggest three-day drop in a month.

That's starting to mean more relief at the gas pump for U.S. drivers. The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline dropped 2 cents overnight to $3.65. The price has fallen 17 cents in the past 12 days.

Gas prices tend to fall at this time of year. Refiners make a cheaper blend of gasoline for the cooler months, and people drive fewer miles. This year, tepid economic growth means demand could be slower than normal. That's why gasoline futures have plunged 12 percent in less than two weeks, including a 4.3-cent drop Tuesday to $2.61 per gallon.

That could put a few more dollars in consumers' pockets by the holidays. AAA predicted Monday that the average price of gas should be down to between $3.25 and $3.40 by Thanksgiving. The average was $3.32 a gallon on Thanksgiving last year.

Oil has plunged as jitters on Wall Street have migrated to the energy markets. 3M Co., with products ranging from Scotch tape to traffic sign coatings, and Posco, the big Korean steel maker, were among the major companies on Tuesday that cut forecasts because of weak economic growth in China and Europe. Caterpillar Inc., the big machinery company, did the same on Monday. That gloominess has sent most global stock markets sharply lower.

"The poor earnings reports seem to have rekindled worries that the global economy is under pressure and slowing," said Tradition Energy oil analyst Gene McGillian.

Brent crude fell $1.19, or 1.1 percent, to end at $108.25 per barrel in London. Brent has dropped more than 5 percent in the past six trading sessions.

In other futures trading in New York:

_ Heating oil fell 3.33 cents to finish at $3.043 per gallon.

_ Natural gas broke the trend, rising 8.3 cents to end at $3.535 per 1,000 cubic feet after falling sharply Monday.
