Lang on NFL: NFC far superior to AFC

If Week 6 taught us anything, it proved that in 2012 there is a big gap between the number of elite teams in the NFC as opposed to the AFC.

Both the Seahawks and the Packers were able to defeat AFC opponents (the Patriots and Texans respectively) that had better records than them going into this weekend. In the case of the Packers they didn?t just beat the Texans, they embarrassed them.

In the AFC East all four teams are tied with identical 3-3 records, including the "mighty" Patriots. As one NFL executive put it after Sunday?s game were completed, "this league never ceases to amaze?. With that in mind it is time to look back at what happened this weekend.

Oh boy, where to start?

Four rookie quarterbacks led their respective teams to victory in Week Six. Not to take anything away from Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson, but the start of the week was Aaron Rodgers.

With people openly wondering what was wrong with the Packers and how they were going to beat the undefeated Texans on the road, Rodgers elevated his play and set a new career high with six touchdown passes in the Packs? 42-24 win. The amazing thing is that if not for some dropped passes Rodgers numbers would have been even more impressive. It was the kind of performance that reminds everyone around the NFL exactly why Rodgers was the MVP last year.

Cowboys fans have every right to be angry with head coach Jason Garrett. If not for his poor clock management they likely would have beaten the Ravens on the road.

Garrett allowed 16 precious seconds to run off of the clock before calling a timeout late in the game. The Cowboys could have ran at least one more play that time to give Dan Bailey a better shot at kicking the game-winning field goal. But because of Garrett?s indecision, Bailey was forced to kick a lengthy 51-yard attempt that missed left.

Somehow the Ravens won a game where they allowed Dallas to run for 227 yards. Needless to say the Cowboys deserved a better fate.

Veteran safety Antrel Rolle wins the award this week after his excellent performance in the Giants? 26-3 statement win over the 49ers. Rolle had two interceptions, knocked down two passes and was tied for the team lead with six solo tackles. Not only did Rolle and the Giants D frustrate Alex Smith, they also held the 49ers to 80 yards rushing.

For the record I think Pete Prisco at CBSSports.com does a great job. But his comment after the Seahawks selected Russell Wilson in the third round of the draft is typical of what most observers felt at the time.

"Why does Seattle take him? They paid Matt Flynn and have two others. Strange pick."

Well six months later the Seahawks are looking very smart for selecting the young man out of Wisconsin with the 75th overall pick.

On Sunday all Wilson did was out play Tom Brady and throw two touchdowns in the last seven minutes of the fourth quarter as the Seahawks upset the Patriots 24-23. Wilson?s game winning heave to Sidney Rice tells you all you need to know why Pete Carroll gave the kid the starting job over Flynn.

On the Seahawks fourth quarter touchdown drives, Wilson completed passes of 51, two, 10, nine, and 46 yards against a Bill Belichick defense. No wonder Tom Brady looked so grumpy when he walked off of CenturyLink Field in Seattle; he just watched a rookie outplay him (and Richard Sherman gave him some of his own medicine).

As someone who covered the CFL for years it is my pleasure to give this week?s award to former Calgary Stampeders defensive back Brandon Browner. Now a very physical cornerback for the bad-ass Seahawks defense, Browner destroyed Patriots receiver Wes Welker with a crushing, but clean, hit mid-way through the second quarter.

The newest hero to Browns fans is rookie receiver Josh Gordon out of Baylor. Gordon played a big role as the Browns beat the Bengals 34-24 in Cleveland?s first win of the season. Gordon won this week?s award after this spectacular open field one-handed 71-yard touchdown reception.

Gordon now has three touchdown catches the last two games and is evolving into a much needed downfield threat for the Browns offense.

The legend of Robert Griffin III in Washington D.C. just gets bigger and bigger every week. In the Redskins 38-25 win over the Vikings, RG3 threw for 182 yards and one touchdown and ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns. The icing on the cake for RG3 was this ridiculous 76-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that put the game away.

Through six games RG3 has run for six touchdowns. The whole Redskins roster rushed for a total of eight touchdowns in the entire 2011 season.

The entire Giants offensive line received a lot of votes after not allowing a single sack in New York?s convincing 26-3 road win over the 49ers. Ultimately this week?s award goes out to Bills safety Jairus Byrd.

After getting crushed the last two games the Bills were desperate for a win. Playing on the road in Arizona the Bills knew they would need all hands to contribute if they were going to beat the Cardinals. Byrd did that and more as he came up with two interceptions. Byrd?s second pick in over-time set up Rian Lindell?s game winning 25-yard field goal.

The Ravens hung on to beat the Cowboys but paid a steep price to do it. Linebacker and emotional leader Ray Lewis suffered a complete tear of his triceps and will miss the remainder of the season. Cornerback Lardarius Webb tore the ACL in his right knee and his is down for the year. The Ravens D is a shell of the unit that took the field in the AFC Championship last year without those two and Terrell Suggs.

-- If the Chiefs are trying to lock up the number one pick in the 2013 NFL draft they?re doing a great job. The Buccaneers pounded the Chiefs 38-10, dropping KC to 1-5. The Chiefs have now turned the ball over a mind boggling 21 times.

-- It is time to start praising Joe Philbin for the job he is doing with the Dolphins. Playing punishing defense, the Dolphins beat the Rams 17-14 to improve their record to 3-3 on the year. Even more impressive is the fact rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill hasn?t thrown an interception in his past two games.

-- The Jets played the kind of ground-and-pound football that Rex Ryan loves as they beat the Colts 35-9. Mark Sanchez only completed 11 passes but two went for touchdowns and none were picked off.

-- As happy as Lions fans are beating the Eagles 26-23 in overtime, disgruntled fans in Philadelphia are fuming at their team?s latest effort. Michael Vick threw two interceptions as the Eagles watched the Lions score 10 points in the last four minutes to tie the game and force OT. What really got Eagles fans upset was watching Matthew Stafford connect on passes of 16 and 17 yards to set up Jason Hanson?s game-winning field goal. Afterwards Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha talked to Rich Hoffman of the Philadelphia Daily News and basically called out defensive coordinator Juan Castillo for his play calling late in the game.

-- It wasn't pretty but the Falcons found a way to beat the Raiders and are the last unbeaten team remaining in the NFL. Carson Palmer's pick six helped but the Falcons have turned the late-game drive into an art form. This time Matt Ryan needed seven plays and 39 seconds -- going 5-for-6 passing -- to set up Matt Bryant's game winning 55-yard field goal.

Think about this for a moment:

If the Broncos beat the Chargers on Monday night there will be only two teams in the AFC with a record above .500 (the Ravens and the Texans). TWO!

Peyton Manning has not thrown an interception in four of the Broncos five games this season. The problem for Denver in their last two losses has been stopping the run. The Chargers and the Broncos are ranked two, three defensively in the AFC with the Broncos holding an edge offensively. Look for Philip Rivers to try and get tight end Antonio Gates more involved in the offense. Rivers is 9-3 in his career when facing the Broncos and has thrown more touchdowns against Denver than any other team.

Educators at Some High Schools Tout Benefits of 4-Day Week

School officials in districts across the country are moving to three-day weekends in order to battle budget constraints.

Nearly 300 districts operated on a four-day school week last year, with several additional districts making the move this year, and more contemplating the move for 2013.

Cutting an instruction day allows schools to trim transportation, janitorial, and utility costs. The Chattooga County School District in Georgia, for instance, reported annual savings of nearly $800,000 after switching to a four-day school week in 2010. But the shorter week requires students to power through longer days when they are in school in order to meet minimum class time requirements set by states.

[Read how high schools are saving money by going green.]

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has spoken out against four-day weeks, and school boards in several states have shot down attempts in their districts to move to shorter school weeks. Critics of the shorter week argue high school students should spend more days in school to prepare themselves for college and the workforce. But teachers and administrators immersed in the schedule say students are more focused while in school thanks to the three-day weekend, and the free day allows high schoolers to intern or enroll in college courses.

"I think the kids are more attentive [in class]. And they know that there's not as much downtime, so we've got to get in there and do it," Elanor Brown, a now-retired robotics teacher at Chattooga High School, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press in May.

Student absences and discipline problems are down under the new schedule, as well, according to the Times Free Press, which reports disciplinary write-ups for high school students dropped from 1,344 in 2008 to just 375 in 2011.

[Learn why teens skipping school could mean fines or jail for parents.]

Having a day free for doctors' appointments and college visits helps keep bodies in class, experts say. It also cuts out absences for student athletes traveling for school-sponsored sporting events, says Theresa Hamilton, director of districtwide services at Garfield School District No. Re-2 in Colorado.

Students and coaches at the district's high schools missed anywhere from a few hours to a full day of school for athletic travel before the switch to a four-day week this fall, Hamilton says, noting the district chose to close on Fridays in part because travel for sporting events was most common on Fridays.

"I've actually heard this from students; if they're an athlete, they like the fact that they're not missing class on Friday," Hamilton says.

Day care is typically not at an issue for students at the high school level, and parents in the rural Colorado farming community say they appreciate having their teens home to help with chores and look after younger children, she says. The district is also working with the local Chamber of Commerce to develop an internship program, which they will roll out to high school students in a few weeks, Hamilton adds.

It will "let them have a full day, instead of a couple of hours after school, to work with a business, get their hands dirty in that business--figure out if that's really what they want to do in college ... and give them those opportunities to develop a craft for when they get out of high school," she says.

Officials at the Waco Community School District in Iowa similarly hope students will use their free day to intern, volunteer, or take college courses if the district transitions to a shorter school week next year. The state's Department of Education approved the district's proposal for a four-day week this summer.

While the plan still needs a final stamp of approval from the school board, which will take up the issue in December, some parents are already keen on the idea.

"I'm hoping he can get some college credit ... He can get a jump start on that, so I'm excited about it," Cinda Blake, whose son is a sophomore at Waco High School, told the Cedar Rapids Gazette earlier this month.

But not all students use the free day as school officials intend. One teen from North Branch Public Schools in Minnesota told the Washington Post last year that he spends the day sleeping in and playing video games.

Twinkies and Root Beer | Timeshare News & Travel

Feeding PigeonsA little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of Root Beer and he started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an elderly man. The man was sitting in the park just feeding some pigeons.

The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie.

The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer.

Again, the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man, and gave him a hug. The man gave him his biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, ?What did you do today that made you so happy?

?He replied, ?I had lunch with God.? But before his mother could respond, he added, ?You know what? God?s got the most beautiful smile I?ve ever seen.?

Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked,? Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy??

He replied, ?I ate Twinkies in the park with God.? However, before his son responded, he added,? You know, he?s much younger than I expected.?

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally!

Though the "Twinkies & Root Beer" piece is normally attributed "Author Unknown," it seems very similar to stories from the late Dr. Leo Buscaglia, professor at the University of Southern California, known to many as "A Cheerleader for Life."

UK PM urges Israel to give Iran sanctions time

Ben Stansall / Pool via EPA

British Prime Minister David Cameron pushed Israel to give sanctions against Iran time to work, during a speech to a U.K. Jewish charity on Monday evening.

By NBC News' Rachel Elbaum and wire reports

LONDON - British Prime Minister David Cameron urged Israel on Monday evening not to strike Iran in the immediate future, citing growing evidence that sanctions are having an effect on Iran?s economy.

?I have said to Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu that now is not the time for Israel to resort to military action,? the prime minister said in a speech to a U.K. Jewish charity. ?Beyond the unpredictable dangers inherent in any conflict the other reason is this: At the very moment when the Iranian regime faces unprecedented pressure and the people are on the streets, and when Iran?s only real ally in Syria is losing its grip on power, a foreign military strike is exactly the chance the regime would look for to unite its people against a foreign military.?

Speculation has grown over the past months that Israel will attack Iran to derail its nuclear program. Last month, in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Netanyahu urged the world to draw a red line ?before Iran completes the second stage of nuclear enrichment to make a bomb.?

Iran maintains that its nuclear project has only peaceful energy purposes and has refused in three rounds of talks since April to scale back its uranium enrichment activity unless major economic sanctions are rescinded.?

Despite Cameron?s insistence that sanctions be given more time to work, he still left open the possibility of a military strike,?saying that under no circumstances would Britain tolerate a nuclear armed Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Spokesman Mark Regev joins MSNBC to discuss Benjamin Netanyahu's recent address to the U.N. General Assembly.

?In the long term, if Iran makes the wrong choice, nothing -- and I mean nothing -- is off the table,? he said. ?A nuclear armed Iran is a threat to Israel and a threat to the world, and this country will work unwaveringly to prevent that from happening.?

Western intelligence sees 'small signs of wavering' on Iran nuclear policy

China pushes new talks
Cameron?s remarks came on the same day that the European Union intensified sanctions on Iran. In addition to the current bans on oil and gas, all transactions between European and Iranian banks will now be prohibited, unless they have been explicitly authorized by national authorities. Natural gas imports will also be banned, along with a host of other related restrictions.

The new sanctions mark one of the EU's toughest moves against Iran to date and a significant change of policy for the 27-member bloc, which has hitherto focused largely on targeting specific people and companies with economic restrictions.?

Iran says ready 'to offer an exchange' on nuke issue

The EU has lagged the United States in imposing blanket industry bans because it says it is concerned not to punish ordinary Iranian citizens while inflicting pain on the Tehran government.

The Iranian economy is in free fall, with its currency, the rial hitting a record low. NBC's Ali Arouzi reports.

Israel applauded the toughened sanctions, calling them an ?important step,? according to the Jerusalem Post.?China however, spoke out against the move and criticized the new sanctions, calling again for talks to resolve the stand-off. China is Iran's largest crude oil customer and, along with Russia, has resisted putting sanctions on Tehran.

"We oppose the imposition of unilateral sanctions on Iran and believe that using sanctions to exert pressure cannot fundamentally resolve the Iran nuclear issue," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a daily news briefing.

"It can only make the situation more complex and intensify confrontation... We hope that all relevant parties can show flexibility, increase communication and push for a new round of talks as soon as possible."

Reuters contributed to this report.

Build a PVC Trashbag Holder [Pvc Projects]

Build a PVC Trashbag HolderIf you routinely camp, have outdoor picnics or throw parties you might find it useful to have a trash bag holder that can be stored away when not in use. Build your own with PVC pipe, joints, and wood or another material for the lid.

PVC project weblog PVC Plans shares a simple trash bag holder project. The exact dimensions will depend on what thickness of PVC pipe you use, but the basic structure will be the same?two squares that each have T-connectors for the two posts that hold up the top of the holder. You'll then make a top out of any material heavy enough to not blow away in the wind such as plywood. Finally you can spray paint the entire setup if you like.

This would be a great addition for the party box we covered last month.

Municipal workers in South Africa threaten strike

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Some 200,000 workers across South Africa will stop working later this week to protest official corruption and poor pay, a spokesman for the South African Municipal Workers' Union said, in action that will increase pressure on an economy already reeling from the impact of wildcat strikes in the crucial mining sector.

The soon-to-be striking workers have no specific wage demands but hope to force President Jacob Zuma's government to put in place "a proper wage structure" so that jobs and associated salaries are properly graded, said Tahir Sema, the spokesman of the municipal workers' union, on Monday.

South Africa has up to 300,000 municipal workers, according to Sema, who denied they were inspired by strikes over low pay that have spread across South Africa since August.

"The workers feel that they deserve more," Sema said. "This is about ensuring pay parity in the sector."

Citing the impact of unresolved strikes in the crucial mining sector, the credit rating agencies S&P and Moody's have downgraded South Africa's credit rating. In cutting South Africa's long-term sovereign credit rating from BBB+ to BBB last week, S&P said the outlook of Africa's largest economy was not positive.

"The negative outlook reflects our view that the medium-term political, economic, and fiscal ramifications of South Africa's social tensions could deteriorate beyond our current expectations," the agency said. "The difficulty of addressing economic and social imbalances could be exacerbated by increasing external pressure in the context of sluggish global growth or investor risk aversion."

About 80,000 mineworkers, representing 16 percent of the mining workforce, are currently striking across South Africa. It remains unclear how these strikes will be resolved, with some employers declaring them illegal. The strikes have been marred by violence, most notably an incident on Aug. 16 when police shot and killed 34 miners at a platinum mine in Marikana, northwest of Johannesburg. Analysts say the Marikana strike may have motivated strike action by mineworkers elsewhere, as the Marikana miners in the end succeeded in winning a hefty 22 percent pay raise.

The mining operations in Rustenburg of Anglo American Platinum, the world's top producer of platinum, have come to a standstill since thousands of mineworkers there went on strike. When the company dismissed 12,000 of the striking workers, some of them threatened to make the mines ungovernable. At least two people were killed in violence there last week.

The wave of violence at some of the mines has been exacerbated by rivalry between unions, with many workers rejecting the established bodies, such as the National Union of Mineworkers, for more upstart unions.

The struggle for supremacy among unions, not low wages, is the "root cause" of labor unrest in the mining sector, according to Solidarity Research Institute, a local think tank.

"In essence it is an undemocratic winner-takes-all system," the group's Piet le Roux said of South Africa's labor-relations law. "It gives the majority trade union the right to negotiate with the company on behalf of all workers and to enter into binding agreements. In the process, minority unions are being excluded and the position of the large unions is entrenched against smaller unions and newcomers in trade unionism."

GOP senator alleges cover-up on Libya

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the United States must continue sending diplomats and aid workers to the Arab world's emerging democracies, despite last month's deadly attack in Libya, during a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Friday, Oct. 12, 2012. (AP) ? A senior Republican senator on Sunday accused President Barack Obama's aides of deliberately covering up the details of the Sept. 11 attack in Libya that killed a U.S. ambassador so that voters wouldn't question Obama's handling of the war on terror.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a long-time point man for the GOP on national security issues, said he believes the administration knew within 24 hours of the assault that it was a coordinated militia attack and was not tied to other anti-U.S. protests across the Middle East. According to Graham, the administration suggested otherwise so voters wouldn't think al-Qaida remained a threat.

"They're trying to sell a narrative, quite frankly, that (the) wars are receding and that al-Qaida has been dismantled," said Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services emerging threats and capabilities subcommittee, in an interview on CBS "Face the Nation."

"And to admit that our embassy was attacked by al-Qaida operatives ... I think undercuts that narrative," he added.

It was an exceptionally pointed allegation on what has become a major campaign issue. The attack on a U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, which killed four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens, has raised questions about whether the State Department denied its embassy staff adequate security to save money and why the White House was slow to label the assault a "terrorist attack."

Democrats shrugged off the allegations.

"This conspiracy stuff is kind of ridiculous to be honest with you, and I've been kind of surprised that they've gone to these lengths. But you know that's what they do," said Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is investigating the incident.

The White House declined Sunday to comment on Graham's allegations. It has said previously that the investigation continues and that officials have relied on information about the attack as it became available.

Five days after the attack, Susan Rice, the US. Ambassador to the United Nations, described the violence as spontaneous and said the administration believed extremists had "hijacked" an anti-U.S. protest over an American-made video ridiculing Islam. Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also had given credence to the notion that the attack was related to protests.

A CIA memo obtained by The Associated Press cited initial intelligence that supported the assertion. But during last week's congressional hearing on the matter, the State Department said it had never concluded that the consulate attack stemmed from protests, prompting lawmakers to question why the administration used the explanation for more than a week.

Graham said Sunday that he had been told by intelligence officials in Libya that "within 24 hours they communicated up to Washington that this was a terrorist attack." Graham did not specify whether that message was relayed to the White House or the State Department, or if that information was kept within the intelligence community.

"Either they're misleading the American people or incredibly incompetent," Graham said of the Obama administration. "There was no way with anybody looking at all that you could believe five days after the attack it was based on a riot that never occurred."

Obama's senior campaign adviser, David Axelrod, on Sunday refuted allegations that Rice or any other administration deliberately tried to mislead the American public.

"Anyone would have said what she said, because that's the intelligence we were receiving," Axelrod said.

The Benghazi attack also has raised questions about whether the State Department had provided adequate security to embassy staff. Democrats blame Republicans for cutting more than $300 million in diplomatic security funds worldwide. Republicans say the State Department could have relied on other discretionary spending accounts to cover costs.

Lawmakers on both sides said Sunday that a supplemental spending measure is being considered. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said he is planning to lead a congressional delegation to various hotspots around the world to ask U.S. diplomatic staff what security concerns they have.

Bloomberg News reported Sunday that Ambassador Stevens' father said he believes his son's death is being investigated adequately and that it would be "abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue."

Graham, Cummings and Issa spoke on CBS "Face the Nation." Axelrod spoke on "Fox News Sunday."
