I was just curious. lol

So, the goals of the our characters will be to figure out which urban legend is true and our characters have to have some type of tie with each other?

User avatar
CherrySwirl
Member for 1 years

Correct, the tie can be as simple as them having a same class at school together or seeing each other at the library every so often. If your character is new in town then that is okay. ^-^

Big Wind Energy: A Green Fantasy of Destruction

Leftist greens fantasise of replacing all nuclear and fossil fuel power plants with big wind farms and big solar energy arrays. But there is a huge problem with that approach, which if pursued will lead to a drastic reduction in available electric power and a general impoverishment of any society that proceeds too far.

The most that big wind, for example, can safely contribute to a modern power grid, is between 6% and 20%, at the most.

The analysis reported in this study indicates that 20% would be the extreme upper limit for wind penetration...

Very high wind penetrations are not achievable in practice due to the increased need for power storage, the decrease in grid reliability, and the increased operating costs. Given these constraints, this study concludes that a more practical upper limit for wind penetration is 10%.... _Reason Foundation

The Korchinski Report "The Limits of Wind Power" (PDF)

More:

...wind turbines by themselves do not add electrical capacity to a grid. They must be paired with other generators of equivalent power to compensate for wind variations and for the stability of the electricity grid.

This pairing?wind and backup?has limits because of the huge rapid variability of wind that must be compensated for by the backup power source. It is estimated that this pairing can account for only 20 percent of the capacity of the grid. This means that wind can be only 6 percent of the generation (.20 x .3). This limit has already been reached in Europe by countries such as Germany and Denmark. _Ulrich Decher PhD

In addition to Germany and Denmark, other countries under EU environmental laws and regulations -- including the UK -- are in danger of entering the blackout zone via a green dysfunction of faux environmental zeal.

Al Fin began his exploration of energy with a strong a priori belief in support of both big wind and big solar energy. In the course of teaching himself about energy, he assisted a number of installations of home-scale wind, solar, and micro-hydro systems. These projects were educational as well as fun. People who are willing to work to build off-grid small scale power can be fun to be around, and often know how to party.

But there is a huge difference between using wind (and solar) for off-grid residencies, and attempting to use large-scale wind as a large proportion of total energy generating capacity for a finely balanced continental power grid. That is the lesson that Al Fin had to learn, and which modern societies must now learn -- before they destroy themselves in pursuit of impossibilities.

Good intentions can make one feel good about himself, but hard-headed, knowledge-based policy is what will keep a society prosperous and healthy. Green policies -- such as the lefty-Luddite green dieoff.orgiast policies promoted by the US Obama administration, the Julia Gillard government in Australia, or any one of a number of European governments (and the EU in general) -- will eventually destroy a society through energy starvation and impoverishment. Such societies eventually pollute the air, water, and soil in far more damaging ways than societies which were allowed by prosperity to move up the energy technology curve -- eventually arriving at safe, clean, and abundant sources of reliable and predictable power supplies.

Ideological efforts to short-circuit that trajectory of development -- such as modern green leftist ideologies -- will doom any societies which adopt them to ultimate failure.

Wind energy is unpredictably intermittent -- and thus unreliable. It is also enormously expensive in terms of materials, land, money, and other scarce resources.

Big wind will take any problem you are trying to solve -- and make it worse.

The renewable energy industry cannot survive without massive government handouts and stimulus. As economic slowdowns settle over Europe, the US, China, etc., governments can not afford to be as generous to big wind and big solar as in the heady days of economic booms and bubbles. Consequently, the renewables industry is beginning to suffer.

It is fine to hold strong opinions. But make sure that they are backed up with something stronger than good intentions. Parts of this article were adapted from an earlier Al Fin Energy piece.

Dodgers edge Giants, stay alive for October

By BETH HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:59 a.m. ET Oct. 2, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Since manager Don Mattingly had a few choice words for his team last week in San Diego, the Los Angeles Dodgers aren't going away quietly.

Elian Herrera singled in the go-ahead run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the NL West champion San Francisco Giants on Monday night that kept their postseason hopes alive.

"It's really exciting," Herrera said, grinning after his first career walk-off hit and fourth game-winning RBI of the season. "They are playing so good. They just have to keep playing like that."

The Dodgers' sixth consecutive victory tied a season high and kept them two games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card. Their win prevented the Cardinals from clinching a playoff berth after St. Louis beat Cincinnati 4-2. The Dodgers and Cardinals each have two games remaining.

"Hopefully the Reds can get out to a good lead and turn it over to their bullpen, which is very strong," A.J. Ellis said.

Los Angeles' winning streak began after opening a three-game series in San Diego with a 2-1 loss last Tuesday. Mattingly talked to his players in a meeting described by Ellis as "pretty tough."

"He called us on the carpet," Ellis said. "Since then, guys have looked themselves in the mirror stronger."

Mattingly's message involved having "players take more accountability," the catcher said.

"I'd like to be clinched at this point," Mattingly said. "But the guys have kept fighting. We'll take care of our business and hope for help."

Hanley Ramirez led off the ninth with a single off Santiago Casilla (7-6), advanced on a sacrifice by Shane Victorino and was held up at third on Luis Cruz's single. Ellis was intentionally walked and Herrera lined an 0-1 pitch off the glove of second baseman Marco Scutaro for the winning run.

"That ball was smoked," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Herrera's liner. "We were in a tough situation there. Marco made a great effort."

Brandon League (2-6) got the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

"The energy has really picked up this week," Dodgers starter Aaron Harang said.

The Giants tied the game 2-2 in the eighth. Angel Pagan doubled to deep right with one out, and Scutaro singled off Kenley Jansen and took second on the throw. Scutaro extended his hitting streak to a major-league and career-best 18 games.

After scoring 18 runs in a three-game sweep of Colorado, the Dodgers' offense stalled. Slugger Matt Kemp went 0 for 4 after hitting homers in his previous two games.

Los Angeles rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Andre Ethier hit his 20th homer - a two-run shot - on the first pitch from Matt Cain after Mark Ellis singled to open the inning.

San Francisco led 1-0 in the first on Buster Posey's double to deep left field with two outs, scoring Scutaro who had walked.

Harang allowed one run and two hits in six innings, struck out three and walked two while facing the Giants for the first time this season. He finished the regular season with his lowest career ERA of 3.61.

Cain gave up two runs and four hits in five innings, struck out two and walked one. He is scheduled to start the Giants' playoff opener.

"It was a good overall season, but it's something that I don't want to be sitting on," he said. "I want to have a good bit more starts in the postseason."

NOTES: Ethier's homer was the first Cain has allowed since Sept. 2 against the Chicago Cubs, a span of 30 1-3 innings. ... Ethier has 20 or more homers for the fourth time in five seasons. ... The Giants had their three-game winning streak at Chavez Ravine snapped. ... Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez hit his career-high 47th double in the sixth, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, tops on the club this season. ... Posey was replaced by Eli Whiteside in the bottom of the eighth because of back spasms. ... Cain turned 28 on Monday.

Report: Half of US adults own tablet or smartphone

1 hr.

Americans' news habits are on the move.

Half of all adult Americans now own either a tablet computer or a smartphone, and one-third use their mobile devices to view news stories and video clips at least once a week.

That's according to a survey by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, which polled more than 9,500 adults from late June to early August.

The findings have "major implications for how news will be consumed and paid for," says Pew. About 20 percent of the mobile news users surveyed said they paid for an online subscription in the last year.

But mobile viewing doesn't necessarily mean that people are cutting back on viewing news on PCs or in newspapers. About half of the tablet news users that Pew surveyed say their tablets spur them to spend more time consuming news, and about one-third say they get news from new sources they didn't use before. Nearly one-third of the mobile users also have print-only subscriptions, and most have no plans to give them up.

Devices based on Google's Android platform are gaining momentum. Pew found that just over half of tablet owners reported owning Apple's iPad, compared with 81 percent a year ago. Forty-eight percent now own an Android-based device, including Amazon.com's Kindle Fire.

This Fog of World App Might Be the Funnest App I've Seen in a Long Time [Apps]

Imagine a world that's not completely and totally explored yet—sort of like in Warcraft where the unexplored terrain is dark because your character never went there. It exists in real life too. It's the own world you live in. You haven't seen everything or been everywhere so this app, Fog of World, makes the places you've already been completely clear and the unexplored places, foggy. As you go to new places, the map gets clearer. It looks so fun. More »

The world number 57, who reached the final of the Guangzhou Open just over a week ago, continued her Asia adventure by defeating Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4, 6-4 to ease into the second round of the Premier Mandatory event.

But it was far from plain sailing for the 18-year-old Robson, who fought back brilliantly from three games down in the first set, winning five without reply against Date-Krumm, 42, as youth ultimately overpowered experience.

?I'm feeling confident when I play at the moment. Even when I'm not playing my best like I was today I still feel that I am able to win matches,? Robson told AFP.

Date-Krumm raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set as Robson struggled with her serve and made a number of unforced errors.

But several big forehands from the young Briton saw her gain confidence and the Japanese was no match for her opponent's power.

Robson, who ended last year in 131st place in the WTA standings, took the second set with relative ease, maintaining her recent momentum in the ?Asia swing? of the tour.

?I was a double-break down in the first set and I knew I had to get a lot better and start moving my feet a bit more,? Robson said.

?She's a tough opponent to play against because she hits the ball very low so you have to bend your legs a lot more than I like to.?

Robson said she was disappointed with her lack of rhythm but was confident she would play ?a lot better? in the next round after improving her movement throughout the match and in a practice session afterwards.

The mixed doubles silver medallist at the London Olympics has shot up the world rankings this year, in large part due to a fourth-round appearance at the US Open and her exploits in Guangzhou, and now has the top 50 in her sights.

?After this week I should be pretty close,? she said. ?I've got to keep winning here for sure and do well in Osaka (next week) to have a chance.?

Robson will play Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino, who defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (7/4) 6-2, in the next round of the fourth and final compulsory event which ranks just behind the Grand Slams and WTA Championships.

Elsewhere, sixth seed Sara Errani from Italy was forced to retire with a thigh injury, meaning compatriot Camila Giorgi went through.

Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina also took their places in the second round with straight sets victories against Maria Kirilenko and Mona Barthel respectively.

Unseeded Monica Niculescu of Romania beat the Czech Republic's 16th seed Lucie Safarova 6-2, 6-0 while Ayumi Morita of Japan knocked out Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-3, 6-0 and China's Peng Shuai beat Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium. ? Sapa-AFP

Injuries due to child abuse on the rise

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - More kids were hospitalized for serious injuries resulting from abuse in 2009 than in 1997, according to a new study - despite previous research suggesting fewer kids are maltreated now than in the past.

Researchers found the increase in serious injuries was due to more babies under a year old being hospitalized. The number of abused, injured kids and teenagers held relatively steady.

The findings are based on a survey of records from 2,500 or more U.S. hospitals conducted every three years.

"We're looking at the most seriously injured kids," said lead author Dr. John Leventhal, a pediatrician from the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

"The kids who get hospitalized for physical abuse represent a very small proportion of all the children in the country who are physically abused," he told Reuters Health - about two to four percent.

Leventhal and his co-author Julie Gaither consulted kids' hospital discharge forms for records of serious abuse, physical assault and shaken baby syndrome. They found the number of children hospitalized for those reasons increased slightly between 1997 and 2009, from 6.1 to 6.4 out of every 100,000.

Those children were kept in the hospital for a week, on average. Their most common injuries were fractures, open wounds and traumatic brain injuries.

Babies are known to be at the highest risk of physical abuse. Based on this sample, the number of infants under one year old with a serious abuse-related injury increased from 56.2 to 62.3 per 100,000 each year.

"Infants tend to be hospitalized at a much higher rate than older children, and I think it's because the injuries they sustain are much more serious," Leventhal said.

For example, he explained, slapping a six-year-old may leave a bruise, but slapping a baby could cause internal injuries.

And sleep-deprived parents are more likely to "lose it" with a baby who won't stop crying.

During the same time period, the number of babies, kids and teens hospitalized for serious injuries not related to abuse dropped by more than 20 percent, the researchers reported Monday in Pediatrics.

Leventhal said there are a few possible explanations for why serious injuries due to physical abuse may have increased while other studies have reported that abuse confirmed by Child Protective Services is on the decline.

It may be harder for CPS to substantiate abuse claims than in the past, he said. Or, most parents may be doing a better job of not hurting their children, but caregivers on the extreme end of the spectrum are still getting violent. Finally, it's possible that economic stressors could be causing more parents to lash out, according to Leventhal.

In another recent study, researchers found that kids' hospital admissions for physical abuse tended to increase as a local area's rate of delinquent mortgages and housing foreclosures rose (see Reuters Health story of July 17, 2012).

Dr. Joanne Wood, the lead author of that report from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, said the increase in hospitalizations in the new study is consistent with her own findings.

The results, she told Reuters Health, point to the importance of "doing a better job at the community level of identifying families who are under stress, who are under pressure, and helping to link them to resources that can help support them."

Leventhal said doctors need to work extra hard at catching the early signs of child abuse - as well as teaching parents how to deal with stressful moments without turning to violence.

His advice to parents at the end of their rope: "Step back, walk away, get help."
