Former CIA operative Edwin Wilson dies at 84

SEATTLE (AP) ? Edwin P. Wilson, a former CIA operative who was branded a traitor and convicted of shipping arms to Libya but whose conviction was overturned after he served 22 years in prison, has died. He was 84.

Wilson died Sept. 10 in Seattle from complications from a heart valve replacement surgery, said Craig Emmick, a director at Columbia Funeral Home in Seattle.

Wilson who set up front companies abroad for the CIA and posed as a rich American businessman was convicted in 1983 for shipping 20 tons of C-4 plastic explosives to Libya. At trial, he said he did it to ingratiate himself with the Libyan government at the CIA's request.

A federal judge threw out that conviction in 2003, saying the government failed to correct information about Wilson's service to the CIA that it admitted internally was false.

Wilson had been sentenced to 52 years in prison for selling arms and explosives to Libya in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and for other crimes.

He served 22 years in prison, mostly in solitary confinement, until he was released in 2004. He then moved to Edmonds, Wash., north of Seattle, to live with his brother.

"Our family always supported him and believed in him," his nephew, Scott Wilson, said Saturday, adding that biggest part of his uncle's vindication was "that the label of being a traitor would be taken off."

"He never considered himself a traitor of course," Wilson added.

While in prison, Wilson sought to prove his innocence by using the Freedom of Information Act to request government documents.

Even after he was released, the man once described as a "death merchant" and "terrorist" worked to clear his name.

"I can't think of one thing I did that I have any guilt about," Wilson told seattlepi.com in a 2006 interview. "I didn't hurt anybody. I didn't get anyone killed."

Wilson filed a civil lawsuit against seven former federal prosecutors and a former executive director of the CIA, but a judge in Houston dismissed the case in 2007, according to Seattlepi.com.

"He wanted to try to hold the people accountable that helped put him into prison," his nephew said. "But he was never bitter."

Wilson was born May 3, 1928, to a farming family in Nampa, Idaho. He worked as a merchant seaman, and earned a psychology degree from the University of Portland in 1953. He joined the Marines and fought in the last days of the Korean War, according to his death notice. He went to work for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1955 after being discharged from the Marines.

After leaving the CIA in 1971, he made millions in the arms trade and bought a sprawling farm in a tony county of Northern Virginia, where he entertained generals, CIA officials and congressmen, according to a 2004 Washington Post article.

"I had a couple of villas that were very, very nice," he told the Washington Post at the time. "I had Pakistani houseboys and I had Libyans working for me, typing up proposals in Arabic."

In 1982, he was lured out of hiding in Libya and brought to New York for arrest.

A federal court in Virginia convicted him of exporting firearms to Libya without permission and sentenced him to 10 years. He was convicted in Texas in 1983, receiving a 17-year sentence for similar crimes.

A New York court sentenced him to 25 years, to run consecutively with the Texas and Virginia sentences, for attempted murder, criminal solicitation and other charges involving claims that Wilson conspired behind bars to have witnesses and prosecutors killed.

Injured Matyushenko calls Hamill?s win a ?weak fight?

Matt Hamill's return to the Octagon was less than thrilling. Hamill may have won his first post-retirement bout with a decision over Roger Hollett, but he didn't win many fans with the slow, plodding bout. The crowd at UFC 152 in Toronto booed the bout, and the fight was panned on social media.

One of the notable tweets about how boring the fight was came from UFC fight Vladimir Matyushenko:

At one point, it was supposed to be Matyushenko in the cage with Hamill. The fight that was originally made for UFC 152 was Hamill vs. Hollett. However, Hollett was still under contract with Bellator. Matyushenko stepped in to fight Hamill, but then tore his Achilles' tendon in training. Hollett had his contract situation cleared up, and was brought back into fight Hamill.

But even with his torn tendon, Matyushenko thought he could still bring a better fight than the one he saw on Saturday night.

Motorola updates device software upgrade timeline, several ICS updates delayed

Android Central

While Motorola may have promised Jelly Bean updates for their most recently launched RAZR devices, for other Moto owners life isn't so peachy on the update front. The device software upgrade page has been updated, and it isn't going to make happy reading for some.

The Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 now read as "further plans coming soon," having previously been pegged to update to ICS in Q3. The Xyboard 8.2 and Xoom Family Edition are also in the same boat, only the pair of tablets are still provided with a date sometime in Q4. Also slipping into the Q4 category is the DROID Bionic.

We previously reported that devices such as the DROID 3 would remain on Gingerbread, and one has to only hope that the same isn't about to be said of some of these. The Atrix 2 isn't even a year old, so to see it left languishing in a pre-ICS world would be a sorry sight. Slipping dates leave us feeling less doomsday, yet still with a slightly ominous feeling. If Moto is already talking the Jelly Bean talk, one does have to wonder where some of these ICS updates are hiding.

Of course, there is always the promise of a $100 credit towards a new Motorola phone should your 2011 onwards device not get updated to Jelly Bean. So don't go throwing away that Atrix 2 just yet.

Obama sits down with David Letterman - should Merkel take notes?

President Obama made a smart move by going on the Late Show with David Letterman, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel could benefit from something similar? if only she could pull it off.

By Rieke Havertz,?Contributor / September 19, 2012

Seated with talk show host David Letterman, U.S. President Barack Obama makes an appearance on the 'Late Show with David Letterman' at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, Tuesday.

Thanks to a heads up from the local news last night, I got to watch President Barack Obama on the "Late Show with David Letterman." I figured if it was big enough to make the nightly news I should watch, but I didn't expect much more than staged jokes, dull conversation, and campaign messaging.

But after the initial chitchat ended ? and President Obama had the audience on his side after cracking a joke about not wanting to see host David Letterman naked ? I understood why the president went on air with the late night host. I also wondered whether it was something German Chancellor Angela Merkel should consider when running for re-election next year.

The setting is perfect: It's free television time on a national level and gives the incumbent a big platform for presenting both his ideas and his personality. I didn't expect Mr. Letterman to let Obama talk about the national debt for more than three minutes, let alone the gridlock in Congress for almost four, but that's what he did.

For Obama it was a way to reach voters who might not be interested enough in politics to follow election coverage closely but enjoy their late night talk shows. His choice of words might have been simple ? referring to "two wars on a credit card" when talking about the national debt ? but his message, peppered as it was with stories about his children and the White House garden, stuck.

Germany has already adopted the US debate culture, so why not appear on talk shows too? Former Chancellor Gerhard Schr?der tried that when he appeared on the popular evening game show "Wetten, dass...?" ("Wanna bet this...?) in 1999, but it didn't really catch on with other politicians. Last year Chancellor Merkel turned down an offer to appear on the show, which was hosted by the popular Thomas Gottschalk until the end of last season.

Maybe it's because Merkel is not quite the hip politician Obama is and likes to keep her personal life private. But even though German elections are never as personality-driven as they are in the US, the candidates still need to appeal to voters, and this is an ideal way to do that.?

Take former Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, who stepped down in 2011 after the disclosure that he had plagiarized his doctoral thesis. Even in the middle of that controversy, he remained one of the most popular politicians in Germany, partly because he knew how to spin the headlines with well-crafted appearances, showing up in an AC/DC T-shirt at a concert or getting his picture taken at tourist hub Times Square on a trip to the US.

Even if Merkel does not want to trade personal stories with Letterman like Obama did, appearing on a carefully chosen entertainment TV show and sharing just a little bit of about her personal life while going long on economic policy and government spending could be an easy way to get the message out to the average Joe ? or in this case, Otto Normalverbraucher.

Rumors are that Mr. Gottschalk is planning a comeback with a show airing on public broadcaster ARD. That could be a nice match.

Male infertility: 'Kick-starting' male fertility with missing protein

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Adding a missing protein to infertile human sperm can 'kick-start' its ability to fertilise an egg and dramatically increase the chances of a successful pregnancy, a team of University scientists have uncovered.

The team from the School of Medicine first found that sperm transfers a vital protein, known as PLC-zeta (PLCz), to the egg upon fertilisation. This sperm protein initiates a process called 'egg activation' which sets off all the biological processes necessary for development of an embryo.

Now, the team has found that eggs that don't fertilise because of a defective PLCz, as in some forms of male infertility, can be treated with the active protein to produce egg activation. The added PLCz kick-starts the fertilisation process and significantly improves the chance of a successful pregnancy.

"We know that some men are infertile because their sperm fail to activate eggs. Even though their sperm fuses with the egg, nothing happens. These sperm may lack a proper functioning version of PLCz, which is essential to trigger the next stage in becoming pregnant," said Professor Tony Lai, who together with Professor Karl Swann led the research team at the University's Institute of Molecular and Experimental Medicine.

"What's important from our research is that we have used human sperm PLCz to obtain the positive results that we had previously observed only in experiments with mice.

"In the lab we have been able to prepare human PLCz protein that is active. If this protein is inactive or missing from sperm, it fails to trigger the process necessary for egg activation -- the next crucial stage of embryo development.

"However, when an unfertilised egg is injected with human PLCz, it responds exactly as it should do at fertilisation, resulting in successful embryo development to the blastocyst stage, vital to pregnancy success," he added.

Published online by the journal Fertility and Sterility September 21, 2012 and funded by the Wellcome Trust, the work strengthens the potential use of PLCz in treating male infertility.

Professor Tony Lai adds: "We've established that this one sperm protein, PLCz, is absolutely critical at the point where life begins.

"Whilst this was a lab experiment and our method could not be used in a fertility clinic in exactly the same way -- there is potential to translate this advance into humans.

"In the future, we could produce the human PLCz protein and use it to stimulate egg activation in a completely natural way. For those couples going through IVF treatment, it could ultimately improve their chances of having a baby and treat male infertility."

Giants cut their magic number to 4

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:41 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Bruce Bochy headed out for a nice dinner with his wife. Third base coach Tim Flannery scored concert tickets for Crosby Stills & Nash.

The NL West-leading San Francisco Giants aren't scoreboard watching as September winds down. The division title is nearly theirs.

Pablo Sandoval homered from both sides of the plate and the Giants reduced their magic number to clinch the division to three by beating the Colorado Rockies 9-2 on Thursday.

"I've seen enough baseball today," Bochy said while publicly planning his evening on the town and opting out of watching the Dodgers. "It's up to us to take care of business."

Buster Posey also connected to back another strong start by Barry Zito (13-8) as San Francisco completed a four-game series sweep. Colorado lost its sixth in a row.

Zito won his fifth straight decision and has done everything he can to earn himself a spot in the postseason rotation after being left off for all three rounds when the Giants won it all in 2010.

"It's nice to be able to go out there and have fun and be loose in September," he said. "When you have fun, you're relaxed, good things happen."

The second-place Dodgers lost 4-1 at Washington on Thursday night, and fell 10 games behind the Giants. San Francisco (87-63) moved a season-best 24 games above .500, its best mark since finishing the 2003 season 39 games over.

"The view looks great right now," Angel Pagan said. "We have to really make sure. We can't talk about playoffs right now."

Sandoval connected from both sides for the first time in his career - at any level, he says. Batting right-handed, he hit the first pitch he saw from Jorge De La Rosa (0-1) into the left-field stands for a solo homer in the first inning. He added a three-run drive into the elevated right-field arcade in the fourth.

It marked his fifth career multihomer game. His last came Sept. 18, 2011, also against the Rockies at Coors Field.

"I'm comfortable at home plate. I don't try to hit home runs," said Sandoval, who snapped a homerless drought of 161 at-bats Wednesday night. "When you don't try, things go your way. I got lucky, man."

Posey, drawing chants of "M-V-P!" from the adoring home crowd, followed Sandoval's fourth-inning shot with his 23rd home run. The Giants homered in consecutive at-bats for the second time this season after Nate Schierholtz and Brandon Crawford did so April 11 at Colorado.

Marco Scutaro's fourth-inning single gave him a career-best 175 hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He added an RBI single in the sixth and has hit safely in 42 of 51 games since joining the Giants from the Rockies on July 27.

Zito received more than enough support in the latest impressive start during his comeback year. The Giants won for the ninth straight time in one of his outings - and Zito's 13 victories are his most with the Giants and most since a 16-win season in 2006 for Oakland.

The left-hander, who had been disappointing since receiving a $126 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2007 season, walked off the mound to yet another standing ovation in the sixth. He raised his right hand and pointed to the sellout crowd of 41,157 in appreciation.

Zito struck out six and walked one in 5 2-3 innings, allowing two runs and a season-high 10 hits. He hasn't lost since Aug. 2 against the Mets.

It was a short day for De La Rosa - but that might have been expected as he came off the 60-day disabled list. The lefty returned to the mound for the first time since May 24, 2011, when he left an outing with elbow soreness and later underwent Tommy John surgery.

De La Rosa was tagged for five earned runs, six in all, and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings. De La Rosa and Jonathan Herrera each had RBI singles for Colorado.

"After 16 months I'm very pleased with what I saw from our starting pitcher," manager Jim Tracy said. "We did a poor job of taking care of the baseball. Two miscues led to seven runs. But the bright spot was the left-handed pitcher who showed he's getting himself back to the guy he can be, and then some."

Rockies slugger Carlos Gonzalez didn't return to the outfield in the bottom of the second after grounding into an inning-ending double play in the first.

He played the entire game Wednesday - with two strikeouts and two groundouts - but was a late scratch Tuesday night with a tight left hamstring. He re-aggravated the leg injury during Thursday's game.

"I tried to go full speed to beat the throw to first," Gonzalez said. "I've pulled the leg before, so it's nothing. I just have to wait until it feels good again before I play a game."

The Rockies were swept in a four-game series in San Francisco for the first time since July 17-20, 2003. They went 2-7 at AT&T Park this year and went 4-14 against the Giants.

NOTES: Sandoval batted .500 (8 for 16) with seven RBIs and three homers during the series. ... Randy Winn was the last Giants player to hit a home run from both sides of the plate, on Aug. 30, 2008, at Cincinnati. ... Zito is 7-2 vs. the NL West and 12-3 when he pitches a scoreless first inning. ... Bochy planned to reach out to Reds skipper Dusty Baker, hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat. ... The Rockies cleared room on the 40-man roster for De La Rosa by transferring LHP Christian Friedrich to the 60-day DL. ... Pagan's double in the third gave him 56 extra-base hits, most on the Giants. ... The Giants improved to 7-11 in games going for a sweep. ... San Francisco topped its win total of 86 from last year, improving to 13-5 in September.

THE RACE: Romney running into some GOP headwinds

Republicans expected the Nov. 6 presidential election to be a national referendum on Barack Obama's presidency and economic stewardship. But some GOP candidates in tight races are getting anxious about being cemented to Mitt Romney.

Pushback against the GOP standard-bearer is showing up in competitive congressional and gubernatorial races.

"I'm working to keep President Obama as our commander-in-chief. Not Mitt Romney," Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren said during Thursday's Massachusetts Senate debate with Republican incumbent Scott Brown.

Brown supports Romney ? but lately it's been a little lukewarm.

Of Romney's secretly-recorded remark to wealthy donors that 47 percent of Americans don't pay taxes and see themselves as victims, Brown said: "That's not the way I view the world."

In neighboring Connecticut, Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon also rejected Romney's "insinuation that 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims who must depend on the government for their care."

And New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, a prime-time speaker at the Republican National Convention, said many in her state are at the poverty level and don't owe taxes "but they count just as much as anybody else."

Among those not paying federal income taxes are many elderly people on Social Security. Obama sought Friday to rally this important and active voting bloc while at the same time get in a dig at Romney.

Programs like Medicare and Social Security are not "handouts," the president said in a satellite address to an AARP convention. "You paid into these programs your whole life. You earned them," he told seniors

Obama also attended a rally in Woodbridge, Va. The state is a prime battleground for Obama and Romney.

Romney greeted law enforcement officers in West Palm Beach, Fla., then headed for Nevada, another closely contested state hard hit by housing woes and suffering the nation's highest unemployment, 12 percent.

Manage Your Time Like a Budget [Time Management]

Manage Your Time Like a BudgetWe all have a limited amount of time to work with, just like our money is finite. If you think in terms of a "time budget," you may be able to use your time better and enjoy your life more.

Dave Lavinsky gives an excellent example on the Growthink blog: You're at the grocery, it's the last week of the month, and the food in your cart will bring you right up to your $400 a month budget. But then you see something on the way to the checkout that you might want, that might taste good or be on sale. Should you go for it? No! Stay within your budget or trade something in your cart for the other item. Lavinsky says:

Your time budget is the same way. When it's 4:55 and you've committed to stop working and go home at 5:00 but there's some nagging task you really want to knock out but would take 30 minutes ? DON'T BUY IT. Don't do it today. Do it tomorrow or some other day.

Go home and enjoy your life. Do something fun or relaxing and stay within your time budget. It can probably wait until later, just like that last-minute item at the store.

Similarly, the next time something's calling out to distract you or waste your time, just remember that you're on a budget.
