New Syria envoy says all conflicts can be solved

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? After two decades as a diplomatic troubleshooter in hotspots from Afghanistan to Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi firmly believes that every conflict can be solved.

That conviction will be put to the test in his new job as the joint United Nations-Arab League special envoy charged with trying to succeed where his former boss Kofi Annan failed ? bringing an end to the 18-month conflict in Syria.

"I think his biggest challenge is convincing the international community to intervene and end this ? whatever it takes, because non-intervention has a much higher cost than intervention," Nadim Shehadi, a Middle East expert at London's Chatham House think tank, said in a telephone interview Friday. "Leaving this to go on is going to create more sectarianism, more extremism and more spillover to the region, and the Assad regime is capable of anything to stay in power."

Brahimi brings a unique background and a wealth of experience to a task that many leaders and pundits have written off as impossible.

He was a freedom fighter in his native Algeria, drifted into diplomacy after his country's independence from France in 1962, became undersecretary-general of the Arab League from 1984-1991, and returned to Algeria as foreign minister from 1991-1993.

In 1994, Brahimi took his diplomatic skills to the United Nations, taking on key assignments in South Africa, Haiti, Afghanistan during and after the Taliban rule, and Iraq after Saddam Hussein's ouster. He chaired a panel that examined U.N. failures in Rwanda's genocide and the massacre at Srebrenica during the Bosnian war, and recommended a major overhaul of U.N. peacemaking efforts and peacekeeping operations.

Reflecting on his 20 years spent trying to make peace, Brahimi acknowledged in a speech in 2010 that conflicts are terrible and difficult and the cause or the result of problems that need to be solved.

Nonetheless, he added, "I still believe very, very strongly that there is no conflict that cannot be solved."

"We, people, make these problems," Brahimi told the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship in Oxford, England. "And we should be able to solve them. We can solve them."

Brahimi said he also learned that in dealing with conflicts "obviously you see a lot of wickedness, a lot of cruelty, a lot of injustice, but you also come across a lot of kindness, a lot of courage, and a lot of forgiveness, and that makes up for it."

He recalled that when former U.S. Senator George Mitchell accepted the job as President Barack Obama's special envoy to the Middle East in 2009, Mitchell said, "you live 800 days of frustration for one day of satisfaction."

During his years at the Arab League, Brahimi served as the organization's special envoy trying to mediate an end to Lebanon's civil war. There were several failed attempts to end the fighting, he said, but finally on Sept. 24, 1989, "we clinched a cease-fire" that looked like it would hold ? and it did, leading to the Taif agreement that ended the 15-year conflict.

"These kinds of satisfactions are the things that one works for," Brahimi said.

Brahimi officially retired in 2005, though he remains active as a lecturer and participant in several non-profit organizations focusing on global affairs. He has taken on special assignments including heading a U.N. panel that investigated the December 2007 bombing of U.N. headquarters in Algiers. He is also a member of The Elders, the international group of prominent statesmen founded by Nelson Mandela that has been speaking out on major issues.

Now 78, the tall, grey-haired diplomat will be stepping into the job held by Annan, a close friend who as U.N. secretary-general sent him to Afghanistan twice, then to Iraq, and then brought him to New York as a special adviser and undersecretary-general in 2004-2005.

Brahimi knows the Mideast and its key players well and speaks Arabic, French and English fluently.

His years spent trying to end Lebanon's civil war put him in close contact with Syria, which for years maintained a strong military presence in Lebanon even though the Taif agreement called for an eventual withdrawal of Syrian forces. Brahimi was also in a key Arab League position when Syria made its dramatic decision in 1990 to participate in the U.S.-led coalition that routed Saddam Hussein's forces from Kuwait in the first Gulf War.

Shehadi, of the Chatham House think tank, said Brahimi's past dealings with the ruling Assad family in Syria in the 1980s means "they won't be able to fool him" as they did others with "games" to try to gain time and make the regime look good.

Shehadi said a diplomatic solution must come from the West, not an internal Syrian dialogue that is part of Annan's six-point peace plan, "and the best possible scenario would be an international agreement which would involve the Russians, who would step in and tell Assad clearly that the game is over."

Brahimi gave some clues on how he might try to end the intensifying Syria conflict in the 2010 speech, in which he stressed the importance of trying to find common ground between the parties ? and "there is always a little bit of common ground, even if it's a few inches" ? and then looking for larger areas of agreement that can lead to an end of the conflict.

In Afghanistan, he played a major role in installing a new government following the rout of the Taliban by U.S.-led forces in 2001. He co-chaired the first U.N.-sponsored meeting of world leaders and Afghan groups in Bonn, Germany that agreed on a blueprint for a political transition ? a possible model for Syria if Bashar Assad falls from power.

In Iraq, he also helped choose an interim government in 2004.

Brahimi has stressed repeatedly that every conflict is different.

Last week, he gave another clue about what needs to be done in Syria.

The Elders issued a statement urging all parties in Syria, and all those in the international community who can influence the outcome of the crisis, to work together toward a Syrian-led solution to end the bloodshed "and move the country away from the abyss."

Brahimi added his own statement calling on Syrians to come together "in the quest of a new formula" so they can live together peacefully without fear or reprisals. And he urged world and regional leaders to end their divisions and unite to ensure that a political transition can take place as soon as possible.

Brain scans don't lie about age

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? It isn't uncommon for people to pass for ages much older or younger than their years, but researchers have now found that this feature doesn't apply to our brains. The findings reported online on August 16 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, show that sophisticated brain scans can be used to accurately predict age, give or take a year.

It's a "carnival trick" that may have deeper implications for both brain science and medicine.

"We have uncovered a 'developmental clock' of sorts within the brain -- a biological signature of maturation that captures age differences quite well, regardless of other kinds of differences that exist across individuals," says Timothy Brown of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Together with UCSD's Anders Dale and Terry Jernigan and researchers from nine other universities, Brown used structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to scan the brains of 885 people ranging in age from 3 to 20. Those brain scans were used to identify 231 biomarkers of brain anatomy that, when combined, could assess an individual's age with more than 92 percent accuracy. That's beyond what's been possible with any other biological measure, the researchers say.

While others had looked at some of the same brain biomarkers in the past one by one, the key was finding a way to combine them to capture the multidimensional nature of brain anatomy and characteristic patterns of developmental change with age. Brown says that they are excited to further explore the new approach and its potential for use in the clinic.

"The fact that we found a collection of brain measures that so accurately captures a person's chronological age means that brain development, or at least certain anatomical aspects of it, is more tightly controlled than we knew previously," Brown says. "The regularity in this maturity metric among typically developing children suggests that it might be sensitive to detecting abnormality as well."

It's not yet clear how these anatomical changes in the brain will relate to maturity in terms of human behavior, which we all know isn't necessarily reflected by our chronological age.

"The anatomy and physiology of these dynamic, interacting neural systems, which we can probe in different ways with MRI scans, have to account for the changes we all observe in human psychological development," Brown says. "We're still figuring out exactly how."

    What is Happiness? | Homework4success

It?s a mental state. Being pleased and content. Enjoying myself. Having fun.

My age, experiences, physical condition, finances, possessions and other things affect my happiness. Right? ? ? ? ? Only if I let them!

We grow up hearing things such as ?I?m so happy to be getting married?, ?going on vacation makes me happy?, ?I can?t wait for retirement so I can be happy?, ?a new car would really make me happy?. We know what people mean when they say it. It?s normal to anticipate pleasure. We don?t argue with the words.

The truth is the marriage may be great or end in divorce. Vacations can go smoothly, be a disaster or someplace in between. Retirement can be exactly what I thought it would be or nothing like it. New cars may or may not be good. None of those things force me to be happy or unhappy. Those two things are decided by me.

What is the lesson I should learn from all this? Seems simple to me. I can waste my life searching for happiness or decide to be happy and enjoy it regardless of the ups and downs.

What?s that I hear? People arguing that we don?t have a choice? You can?t be happy if you?re broke, sick, disabled, mentally slow, (you fill in the blank). We wouldn?t choose those things but history is full of people who overcame them or adjusted to them. How could they do it?

Attitude. Think about it. Does a person handicapped in some way enjoy life more when struggling toward accomplishing self assigned goals or grieving about bad luck? My experience is trying to do something about whatever I would like to change takes me closer to pleased and content than complaining.

How about people who are not handicapped? Ever hear of rich, beautiful, famous people who are miserable? Athletes with perfect bodies who can?t seem to find happiness? Why?
Don?t know what it is? Don?t know where to look? Probably both.

It sure seems logical to me to try self improvement by changing attitude and habits. Deciding what I want to change and working toward changing it are healthy and rewarding. Who knows? It has worked for lots of people before me. Why not me?

Larry King Now!: Matthew McConaughey (2012): Tonight with Matthew McConaughey

The clip Tonight with Matthew McConaughey from Larry King Now!: Matthew McConaughey (2012) with Matthew McConaughey, Larry King. Powered by: Anyclip. any moment from any film. On Larry King Now, Matthew McConaughey, Hollywood southern heartthrob the kind of romantic comedy he talks about why he left it behind for media roles. And were not running from NC-17. Were just saying, Oh, hell, yeah were NC-17. Come get you some real NC-17. Oh, you were NC-17. And his latest turn as a sociopathic murderer. If you break this rule, youll be killed. Plus, he opens up about why he finally got hitched. After you get married, its like you dont have an argument and think, Uh-oh, this could be it. You have an argument, its Lets work through this. Its not a big deal. Thats all ahead on Larry King Now. One of my favorite people is Matthew McConaughey, and his new movie is Killer Joe. Were going to talk about that in a minute. Hes the Hollywood heartthrob. You hate that, right You still give me that line of crap. I want to talk about Killer Joe in a moment, but first why are you so thin Im losing some weight. Ive got a role coming up in the middle of September, and I lost 15 pounds. I have to lose about 15 more. Its based on the true life of a guy named Ron Woodroff in the 80s. He was in Dallas and contracted HIV through some drug use. He was doing ADT, which is what the FDA approved for HIV patients at that time, and didnt like how he was feeling, and didnt feel like it was the best for his health. And he became a black market drug dealer basically of homeopathic HIV medications to everyone in Dallas, which happened to be mostly homosexuals who had contracted HIV. Its the story of this guy who ended up living seven years longer than the doctors gave him as a chance to live. He was basically a black market peddler of homeopathic HIV medications. A sympathetic figure I dont sympathetic because hes sick and has HIV, but the humor and the irony of it is the guy was actually very homophobic. So all of his clientele its not a crusader movie. Hes not on a crusade, but the people hes dealing with it maintains a certain levity and humor. He becomes more human through it, but its not a real arc of a When youre doing a thing like this of a movie thought, people worry about you. Like, Are you okay Well, they might have started to worry about it until we got to talk about it here. And hopefully theyll understand that I am okay, and Im doing it on purpose. You have to lose another 15. I need to lose another 15. I should not look healthy by the time Im doing it. Is it hard to lose weight Its hard, but the hardest part when they make it easy is you have to mentally click. I just kind of dared myself. I havent been this light since I was in the ninth grade. Im kind of looking at it as sort of a cleanse. Its a bit of a spiritual cleanse, a mental cleanse drinking a lot of tea and things like that. The first 10 days are much harder than after the first 10 days because it takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself, and that youre not going to give it something else from the outside. So we cleared it up. Youre not sick Im not sick. Whats the name of the movie Its called Dallas Buyers Club. You try new things. Now Killer Joe, as I said I gave a quote from the movie, called it it will fry your eyeballs off. Thats a good one. Ive never seen youve never seen a movie like this. Why did you take the role of a Dallas police officer whos a sociopath and a contract killer Why Let me tell you the first time I read it, it disgusted me to the point where I just put it down, didnt want anything to do with it, wanted to go take a hot shower with a steel brush, and clean myself off like a tough weekend in Vegas or something. Theres a woman I work with there are a few people I work with whose opinion I appreciate, who had read it simultaneously. When I spoke to them, they were howling laughing. They were like, You didnt think it was funny I was like, No, what was funny about it They pointed out a few things. They pointed out the writing Tracy Letts writing, the meter. He has a whole different meter of his writing that you have to really sustain, sort of silences that are natural to the characters, but unnatural to someone like you and I having a discussion. And I gave it a couple days to flush it out of my system. I sat back down with an open mind and I guess a different I had my funny bone turned on. And I did find myself chuckling. I found the humor in it. I found the humor in the absurdity and the deliberate provocation in the sort of cheerfulness in the amorality in again, the levitated realism of it. That was understanding Tracy Letts writing. And also after one sit down like were sitting here with the director, William Friedkin one hour with him was the most clear Ive ever heard a director be exactly what he saw this film as being . This is the man who did The French Connection. He did Exorcist. Hes not a young man. Hes back, huh I dont know if he ever left, and he sure as hell is a young man, though. He may be up there in years; but like yourself, hes kind of growing in reverse, or never left younger years. As far as energy and intellect and eyes open for new things that are happening in the world and new experiences and seeing opportunities as the first time, Billys right there. [movie playing Killer Joe opens on the 27th. How do you think its going to do 27th were going a couple people are going to see this little film called The Dark Knight. A few people will go see that. Thats the week before. Thats the week before. Theyll still be seeing it thought that week after. Were going to open. Were going to do it in a traditional platform. Were going to open in a few screens in New York, and then were going to go wider to different markets. Were not going to be 300 screens in every single multiplex. Its not really designed or had the DNA to be that way. But we are wearing NC-17 has a badge. Were not running from NC-17. Were just saying, Oh, hell yeah. Were NC-17. Come get you some real NC-17. Its gotten wonderful world of mouth. Critically speaking and online people are absolutely blown away by it. There are some scenes in this you have never seen in a movie. There are some scenes that have never been in a move. There are some that I dont even know where Tracy Letts where his mind goes at 3 a.m. Its got a lot of good shock value, and its done well. Coming up My mother was like when we had kids first, we told her we had her first child. Camila was pregnant. She was like, No, thats out of order. Thats next on Larry King Now. Why did you leave the romantic comedy image, which has kept you in good stead Wonderful stead paid for this suit. No way. That was at a time in my life where I was just wanting to mix it up, and I wasnt sure how or exactly what I wanted to do. I started to receive some romantic comedies, and I started to receive some action adventures. I think mainly I looked at them, and I was saying, You know what Ive kind of done that before. Then some of the other ones, I said, I havent done that before, but I feel like I could do that tomorrow. I said, Just sit tight, McConaughey. Go take care of your family which I was getting started at the time Lets keep our eyes open for something thats going to arrest me a little bit. Its going to shock me, challenge me, scare me a little bit, and make me really, really excited and challenged to go to work. I started to attract these things, like Bernie, Magic Mike, Killer Joe, Mud, Paperboy. They sort of came to me how the world works cyclically like that. I started to attract them. I'm glad I did because thats exactly what I was looking for. Bernie was some kind of Great story. Yeah. Great story. You had a good time doing that A wonderful time. I was working with Richard Linkletter, who I worked with now three times. He and I have a great working relationship. You finally got married I did. Whats it like What are you married a month Married a month. Weve been together six years. Was it any different when you tied the knot, as they say Im feeling the difference. We spent a lot of time doing what I call preproduction before getting married. Im really interested in Everythings a movie. Whats it about What is it about beside just the age-old traditional ritual that people say, Thats what youre supposed to do. My mother was like when we had kids first and told her we had our first child. Camila was pregnant. She was like, No, thats out of order. Youre going in the wrong order. Its a bond between us. Its a bond between us and God. Its good for us as a couple. We think its good for the kids, and we think its good for just the community at-large. It has brought us closer. Decisions we make when I think about decisions that I make for her or myself or the family, I more quickly have her in mind, and whats best for her. Youre a we. Much more of a we. We were a we somewhat before. We havent changed our lifestyle at all. Were not living any differently. But you definitely I know one thing. This is very simple. One thing after you get married, its like you don't have an argument and think, Uh-oh, this could be it. You have an argument and Lets work through this. Its not a big deal. How old are the kids Levi just turned 4, and Vita, my daughter, is 2.5, and Camilas pregnant with our third. How did the 4-year-old react to you getting married He gets it. He got it. It was very interesting. For the past two years, he would go to Camila and go, Mama, why are you not a McConaughey Why am a McConaughey. Vitas a McConaughey. Papa is a McConaughey, but youre not a McConaughey. Tough question to answer. Theres a short answer and along answer. We chose to engage in the long answer, which was still going on. So when we told him that, Mom and papa are going to make a union and mamas going to become a McConaughey, he unsolicited grin on his face, went off and danced around and came back and was just so affectionate to her and myself and knew what we were doing. How he understood it, Im not sure, but it meant something to him. What was the wedding like The wedding was a three-day we had 170 people come and stay at our house for three full days. So we sort of No, in Austin. On our Austin property, we had 40 tents. Everyone stayed on property in air conditioned tents. We had it catered great sushi by chef Tyson Cole there in Austin on Friday night on the lawn. Everyone came in Friday and got their salutations over with, because they hadnt seen each other for a while. Saturday was on the lawn, and the ceremony was Saturday night. Then Sunday, was a brisket and crayfish boil and people left Monday morning. We had our friends and loved ones come to witness and be there to support us. It was it turned out perfect. And the kids like it The kids loved it. Levi went to bed at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, and Vita went to bed at 5:30, so they stayed right with us. Coming up. Ive never done it before [inaudible,000. But then after you do it after I did it, I honestly wanted to do it some more. Thats next on Larry King Now. Someone said that there's a story that if they do the poster and you dont have a shirt on, the movie does better. Yeah. So shirtless brings some more bucks brings some more dollar bills. Yeah. You ever hear that I havent heard that. There may be a science to that. What do you make of that Do you like that image Uhm, its part of an image. You can't do anything about it. The DVD of Bernie comes out The 21st Aug. 21. Whats it like working with him Richard Richard Linkletter hes the first guy that I ever worked with. Hes the guy that gave me my chance in the first film I ever did, Dazed and Confused. Our working relationship is exactly as it used to be, except we know each other a little bit better. But our process is the same. He comes to me with a role, and its not always the lead role. He comes to me with a role that allows me to be a character, and he loves to do character work with me. Its very fun working with him because like with Bernie, we did everything from, Well, what about a wig What about a pot belly What about these plumpers in your back It just hes very playful like that in creating character. Hes not precious to being exactly who I am. He likes to play with character, and thats fun as an actor to go work with somebody who wants realism, but also wants to play like that. Were you surprised that Magic Mike did so well I was surprised it did as well as it did and its doing. It opens 40. I knew Magic Mike lets go back to the shirtless ads you brought up. Its a male stripper movie. So the low-hanging fruit there is youre going to go get skinned. If you like mens skin, youre going to get it in this film. So thats the low-hanging fruit. After that, I think people saw the movie. And also a lot of people really critically liked the story and stuff, which kept people coming and gave them an extra dose of something to make the movie worth their while. So that one had the DNA of possibly hitting all access, which it did in making million the first How did you like stripping Nerve-wracking. Ive never done it before. No kidding. Ive never done it before like that. Ooo! Its a buzz scary. But then after you do it, after I did it, I honestly wanted to do it some more. Im like, I'm never going to do this again. I want take two. Then after take two, I was like, Im never going to do this again, I want take three. I think I got two takes, maybe three takes, and we got it. Do you like watching yourself Sometimes. If Im at home, and Im flipping through and a movie comes on, I usually skip it. About 100 percent of the time, I skip it. When I do a film and then I go see it for the first time, its very seldom a good experience for me. If a movie takes two months to shoot, its two months of history just bombarding my brain down to an hour and a half or hour and 45 minutes of celluloid, which is a film. Its almost too much work. I dont listen to the song. Im more watching note for note. Its laborious for me. It takes about three times for me to see a film for me to honestly be able to judge whether I like the film or not and whether I like myself in it. On Larry King Now, Matthew McConaughey, Hollywood southern heartthrob the kind of romantic comedy he talks about why he left it behind for media roles. We have some Twitter questions for you. One FaceBook and Twitter asking about Julie wants to know how you balance home and work. Yeah. Good question. I mean for anybody, its a challenge. One of the things that I do that, thanks to my wife Camila shes open for this and wants to do this we try and combine them as much as possible, meaning if dads going to work, mama and the kids come with. So Im trying to give them the experience. Just five years ago, I was thinking when I had family, I would not really want them to come be the traveling circus with me. Then I hit me, and I noticed. I looked around at all the great people I met and worked with and the great locations I would go to. I was like, What a perfect life for a kid a young man or woman to come on. We try to bring them with us. We now get a house and bring the kids with us. They go to school usually in that location. They learn something specific about that geography or that city that theyre in. And bringing them with us helps a lot. Joe wants to know your biggest regret in life. Biggest regret in life. I mean I don't have nothing really. You ever turn down a role you regretted No. Ive thought about that. I havent really. There was one that I loved the movie, and I didnt quite have the offer, but I didnt strongly pursue it. It was right after Time to Kill. Its called LA Confidential. I didnt really turn it down, because I dont know if I had the offer, and I dont remember which one. That was a great movie. Maybe. Im not sure who it was. And there was rumor that I was offered the role the Leonardo DiCaprio role in Titanic but turned it down. But that rumors false. I never got offered that role. As Ive said if I did get offered that role, Im going to find that agent because we lost a bunch of money. Where would you be if you werent an actor, you think I think Id be I think Id either be a college football coach or a conductor. You did that great story about the deaths of We Are Marshall. That was great Yeah. It was. Are you proud of your body Yeah. Now youre losing it. Oh, I dont know if Im proud of it. Im happy to be in my skin. Anything you can tell me that I could do Where do you want to go What do you want to do I want to be you. You want to be me Youre growing in reverse anyway, Larry You think so You know that. You know that. You know its all from here up, and the rest of the body follows. Youre a good guy. I love your work. Thank you. I love Killer Joe. Thank you, Larry. Alright now appreciate it. Matthew McConaughey. And were not running from NC-17. Were just saying, Oh, hell, yeah were NC-17. Come get you some real NC-17. Oh, you were NC-17. And his latest turn as a sociopathic murderer.
