We Finally Know What Really Causes Ice Cream Headaches [Science]

Everyone's experienced that sharp, shooting headache as a result of stuffing their face with ice cream. Previously, scientists have suggested it's just a result of the rapid cooling and rewarming of blood vessels in the sinuses—but a new study shows that the cause is actually buried much deeper. Mel Gibson: What I?ll tell my Jewish son about anti-semitic remarks

Mel Gibson is involved in another dustup over alleged anti-semitic remarks, and a Jewish mom contemplates how she'll talk to her son about hatred.

?You Jewish son of a *****,? a boy taunted my brother on the school bus one day as I sat nearby.

Linda K. Wertheimer, The Boston Globe?s former education editor, writes about religion, education, and family for various publications and blogs at Jewish Muse, A Writer's Blog on Faith and Family. I was 14, my brother, Kevin, 16. The comment made us seethe, but we let it pass. Then a few weeks later, my family, the only Jewish one in our neighborhood and rural Ohio school, woke up to find swastikas etched in wax on our home windows and cars.

This time, my family did not let it pass. My parents contacted a deputy sheriff, who was friends with my brother through?Boy Scouts. The deputy sheriff went to the doors of the boys we thought were responsible. None admitted to the anti-Semitic act. My family could have told our school, but did not. This was in the late 1970s before it was popular for schools and parents to directly confront anti-Semitism, racism, and other acts of intolerance.

Now a parent, I read about Mel Gibson?s latest insensitive comment about Jews and wonder how to help my son cope with anti-Semitism and prejudice better than I did during my childhood. Mr. Gibson, according to several news reports, quipped, ?Funny, you don?t look Jewish,? in response to a script co-writer?s comment that he was Jewish. Gibson also is in hot water with another Jewish screenwriter for an angry rant that allegedly included anti-Semitic remarks.

I?m heartened that the media is not simply letting Gibson getting away with making offhand comments about Jews.

My 4-year-old son, frankly, would not understand any of this. But at some point in life, he will hear a comment that maligns Jews and wonder why people hate him so. The slur may come from a famous person or worse, from someone he knows.

I do not criticize my parents for not reporting the swastika incident to my school. Our school, at least from the 1970s into the early 1980s, showed little interest in teaching students the importance of respecting all religions. Instead, the school forced religion upon us, through pastors who preached at Easter and Christmas assemblies and through Bible study classes once a week in elementary school.

After our house was covered with swastikas, I was angry and ashamed, ashamed somewhat that I was Jewish, ashamed that I did not know how to fight back against such ignorance. For I think the boy who taunted my brother and the boys who likely put swastikas on our house were more ignorant than anti-Semitic. Gibson, an actor I admittedly adored during his Lethal Weapon days, may be a combination of both.

I look at my son and want to protect him from hearing anything derogatory about his religion, but know I cannot. How should he respond to a direct insult about his faith? Do not shout back, I will urge him as he grows older. But do not take it in silence, either. He should tell the person that it is wrong to malign someone else?s faith that way. If the person brushes him off, he should tell an adult. He should always tell me and his father.

If I sense, as a parent, that some of his peers are not tolerant of other faiths or races, I plan to act to educate rather than focus only on my son. So many resources exist now that did not during my childhood. We can teach our children by showing the 2004 documentary, Paper Clips. Eighth-graders at a rural school in Tennessee collected paper clips for each of the 6 million people killed in the Holocaust. They also created a museum about the Holocaust.

Last night was Yom Hashoah, the international Holocaust Memorial Day. I sang as part of a chorus in a concert at Temple Emunah in Lexington, a Boston suburb. Guest speakers came from Facing History and Ourselves, a course used in schools internationally to teach children how to fight prejudice with compassion. The students learn about the Holocaust and other examples of genocide. They watch videos like one the temple congregation was shown last night ? "The Power of Good" ? about Nicholas Winton, who saved hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis.

It may be too late for Gibson to reverse many Jews? opinion of him. It?s never too late to teach our children well.

Last night, a soloist sang author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel?s words:

?The opposite of love is not hate, it?s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it?s indifference.? The words haunted and comforted me. How much I want to teach my child not to be indifferent. How much I want to make sure that I never stay silent when I must speak.

Alesis Q25

Many MIDI controllers these days come with plenty of knobs and sliders. But the Alesis Q25 ($179.99 list) harkens back to a different era, one of simplicity of design?except updated for today's laptop and iPad-driven music studios. The Q25 ?is a 25-note, velocity-sensitive MIDI keyboard with a built-in USB interface. It promises accurate MIDI control, portability, and not much else. As long as your needs are modest, it's a solid controller at a bargain price.

Design, Controls, and Connections
The Q25 measures 19 by 7.25 by 2.38 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.6 pounds. It's made entirely of black matte plastic, with non-weighted synthesizer keys in white and black, and slightly tapered, rounded edges that lend the Q25 a feeling of solidity and comfort when transporting it. The controls really are simple: To the left of the 25-key key bed are old-style, plastic pitch bend and modulation wheels. The pitch bend has a center detent and returns to the center as soon as you lift your finger, while the modulation wheel has no detent and no spring-loaded return; it stays in position wherever you leave it.

Above the two wheels are Octave Down, MIDI/Select, and Octave Up buttons. Finally, there's a data entry slider that feels a little cheap and scratchy when moved in its recessed vertical slot. There are no other programmable knobs, sliders, pads, or transport controls?this should be obvious at a glance, but controllers like the M-Audio Oxygen 25 ($149.95 list) trade a little extra depth and a higher street price (more on that later) for much more in the way of MIDI control.

Alesis throws in a USB cable and a Quick Start guide, and also bundles a DVD copy of Ableton Live Lite Alesis edition, which gets you started recording and sequencing music. The Q25 is class-compliant, so you don't need to install a driver on the PC or Mac; just plug it in and start playing. There's no aftertouch, though. The Q25 works fine with an iPad as long as you buy the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit , which comes with two adapters, one of which mates a dock connector to a USB port. Unfortunately, the Q25 doesn't work with the IK Multimedia iRig MIDI , since that interface works with a MIDI cable only, and therefore requires some kind of external power for the controller; the Q25 doesn't come with a power adapter in the box.

Alesis Q25

Testing and Conclusions
I had no problem playing and recording MIDI data in Apple Logic Pro 9, Steinberg Cubase 6.5, and Cakewalk SONAR X1 using the Q25. The Octave Down and Octave Up buttons made it easy to jump around in the keyboard range, depending on the sound I wanted, and the velocity sensitivity was well tuned and felt natural to my fingers. Playing the keys resulted in no untoward vibrations or rattles, and the Q25 stayed put on my desk, thanks to its well-positioned rubber feet. One glitch: I noticed that after several weeks of testing, the lower B key began to rattle a tiny bit internally, although the rest of the key bed remained rattle-free.

You probably wouldn't want to knock the Q25 around in the back of a van on an extended live tour, at least without a (very) well-padded case of some kind. But as a small desktop controller, or as one you could throw in a bag and bring to a hotel or a friend's house, the Q25 does the job with aplomb. And at a street price hovering in the $70 range, it's tough to find something like it that's this inexpensive. The M-Audio Oxygen 25, now on its third generation, tends to cost $90 to $100 on the street, despite its lower list price. The Oxygen 25 offers much more in the way of real-time controls, thanks to its array of knobs, sliders, and transport buttons. The Oxygen 25 is also slightly thinner than the Q25, although it's deeper, and requires more of that crucial space between your desktop PC keyboard and monitor.

Troublesome Karakoram glaciers getting bigger, new study suggests

Despite the global temperature increase and the overall shrinking of the world's glaciers, some glaciers in the Karakoram mountains have actually grown over the past decade, according to a new study.

Practicing good science often means accepting inconvenient data. The results of a new study that depict the recent growth of some Asian glaciers ? despite the warming global climate ? surely fall into this category, especially in the US where, according to a 2011 Harris Poll, public belief in manmade warming dropped from 71 percent in 2007 to 44 percent in 2011.

This research, led by glaciologist Julie Gardelle of the University of Grenoble, has confirmed suspicions about the massive glaciers in the Karakoram Mountains along the border of India, Pakistan and China. The researchers analyzed satellite images of a 2,168 square-mile area, and found that the glaciers are not losing ice, but probably gaining it. The study's results were recently published in Nature Geoscience.

For the past seven years, scientists have noted that the Karakoram glaciers have been spreading. Yet it was not clear whether the glaciers were merely becoming thinner, with the same amount of ice, or less, spread over a larger area, or if they were actually gaining mass.

To determine which, Gardelle and her team used data taken by instruments aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor and the French SPOT5 satellite, which collected the relevant data in late 1999 and 2008, respectively. The researchers estimated that, over this time period, the glaciers gained mass. On average, the glaciers developed a new patina of ice that, if melted, would amount to just over four inches of water.

Gardelle?s team, as well as many other scientists, say they cannot yet determine why the glaciers grew. The Karakoram region has been a climatological oddity for decades. Between 1961 and 2011, weather stations there have reported increases in winter precipitation and decreases in summer temperatures. A lack of glacial meltwater has constricted the flow of one of the local rivers by 20 percent, over the same time period. Incidentally, the 46,000 ice masses that compose the glaciers of the Tibetan plateau provide water to over 1.4 billion people living in central and southern Asia.

Though scientifically?intriguing, the scientists involved in this study are wary of the political impact of these results; especially in light of the 2007 snafu involving the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?s mistaken assertion that the Himalayan glaciers would be eradicated by 2035, and the damage to the credibility of the IPCC?s otherwise robust body of research. Unfortunately, the political volatility of manmade global warming is such that even the smallest oversight can have a significant impact on the general public's perception.

Re-Tile Your Floor on a Budget

Options that you can use for tiling the floor in your home can consist of regular floor tiles, sparkly tiles and galaxy granite tiles. This project is easily done by hiring a contractor. If you have a low budget, this task may need to be done yourself. Investing in flooring is a good option for long lasting durability and return on investment. However, the tiles currently on the floor may need to be replaced if old or starts to show signs of wear. Tiled floors are commonly found in areas of your home such as the bathroom, kitchen and hallway.

The first step to re-tiling your flooring on a low budget is to find the type of tile to use. You can use the same type of tile or select a different option. Search online or at a local flooring shop to determine your pricing options. Tiles are normally priced by the square foot or square metre.

Higher quality tiles will cost more than if you use a lower quality tile. You may find prices for tiles that range from ?1 per square foot to over ?10 per square foot. If you are looking for a cheap tile, go to the clearance area of a home improvement store.

Measure the square footage of the area that you need to re-tile. Multiply the square footage by the total cost of the tile. This will give you the approximate cost for the material. Compare your tile choices and determine what you can afford to purchase. Select two to three options that match your room. You may also mix and match tiles to create a unique design for your floor. This allows you to include other types of tile if you cannot obtain enough of your selected colour. If you are short of tiles, choose another option to fill in missing pieces or use these tiles to create a border.

It's better to purchase all of your tiles at one store, this way you can be more certain that you'll be buying from the same batch.

Shop around by going to different stores to see the type of tiles that are available. You may be able to save money if you can find the same tiles for a cheaper price at a different store. Another option is to look for tiles that are no longer trendy. Installing the tiles inside of your home may require proper measurements. So make sure you measure twice and buy once. Galaxy granite tiles are the better choice!

Are you someone who can't say no? ? Business Management Daily ...

Page would like to be more assertive, yet professional, at work, but every time her boss approaches her to take on yet another assignment, she says ?yes,? even though she knows she doesn?t have time for it.

We say ?yes,? because ?we have a real desire not to let down our bosses,? says negotiations coach Jim Camp. ?People are afraid if they say they can?t do it, they look incompetent or incapable.?

Saying, simply, that you don?t have time to do a project may cast you as uncooperative. But it doesn?t help anyone if you say ?yes? while knowing you can?t possibly complete all the work. You will have created the crisis by saying ?yes.?

How can you set boundaries more assertively with your boss, without coming across as incapable or rude?

1.??Say ?thank you? for the opportunity to take on something new. Being asked shows that your boss believes in you, says Tres Roeder, author of A Sixth Sense of Project Management, so acknowledge it with appreciation.

2.??Stall. If you suspect your plate is full, let your boss know that you?re juggling several time-sensitive projects. Say, ?Would you give me 10 minutes to look at the details of this new task and see how I might accomplish it by your deadline??

The key is to avoid automatically saying ?yes? or ?no.?

3.??Estimate. How long will it take to reach various milestones for the project? Take the information back to the boss, along with a proposal for when you could accomplish the work, or reach the first milestone.

4.??Ask your boss to prioritize for you. If you say yes, despite the fact that you have too many hot projects, ask your boss, ?Should I stop working on X and Y in order to finish this project first? What?s more important??

If you report to multiple bosses, of course, the question isn?t as straightforward. You?ll have to pose the question to both managers in order to understand priorities.

5.??Pull in reinforcements. If you?ve been cultivating relationships, you may have others who can help you. If you?ve been asked to pull together a spreadsheet as part of a larger presentation, perhaps someone with Excel prowess can pitch in and help.

Bonus: Knowing how to partner with team members shows your skill at managing relationships and solving problems.

6.??Consider what the discomfort of ?yes? could mean. Could it be that this project will stretch your skills? Could it be a way to get you noticed?

Sometimes the urge to say ?no? comes from a fear of failure. If your manager is handing you the work in order to push your skills ahead, try to fit it in, recommends Roeder.

7.??Start giving weekly status up??dates. If your boss doesn?t have a sense of how much you juggle, start telling him.

?Managers can?t see into every employee?s world,? says Evelyn Williams, a Wake Forest University professor of organizational behavior. ?You have to tell them what?s happening in the trenches so they can make better allocation decisions.?

? Adapted from ?When You?re the Worker Who Can?t Say No,? Eilene Zimmerman, The New York Times.

Pictures of the Day: Rashad Evans and famous people

As Rashad Evans trained for this Saturday's title bout with Jon Jones, something about his camp attracted famous people.
Rashad Evans shared this picture of when football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin dropped by their camp. Do you think they're discussing the draft position of Chandler Jones?

During a trip to Puerto Rico, Evans met up with boxing legend Felix Trinidad. It was pretty rude to punch the camera, gentlemen.

Here, Evans is with Victoria Azarenka, the No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world and the winner of the 2012 Australian Open. As shown on "Primetime," he also was in the stands for one of her matches.
Before Evans' UFC 133 bout with Tito Ortiz, he picked up striking tips from another boxing legend. What advice do you thin Bernard Hopkins had for Evans?
