Will your gadgets freeze in your car in the winter?

1 hr.

You almost always have your laptop, iPod, and smartphone with you, but don't always want to lug them around. Is it okay to leave them in your car if it's particularly cold outside? What about in the summer heat? You know extreme temperatures aren't good, but how hot is too hot and?how cold is too cold?

We've?talked about temperature limits?before, but more in the context of CPU temperature???leaving gadgets?in your car in the cold or heat is a completely different matter, since it affects the battery, screen, and other parts. In general, you want to avoid extreme temperatures as much as possible, so no, I wouldn't recommend leaving it in your car. Here's a bit more detail on what your laptop or smartphone can take.

How hot is too hot?
We all know heat is bad for your tech. Not only can it?fry the processor?of your laptop or gadget, but it can lower your battery's life and even make the hard drive expand. And, if you live in a humid area, you also have to worry about condensation building up on the inside.

Generally,?once it hits 90? or 95? Fahrenheit, you want to start shielding your laptop and smartphone from the heat. Remember that the inside of your car will get hotter than the outside, too, so even if it isn't quite 90??outside, you should keep it in your bag or leave it at home. And, if you absolutely must have it with you, do your best to keep it in the shade and out of direct sunlight.?Laptop stands?can also help a great deal.

How cold is too cold?
Cold is a slightly more interesting beast. In general, tech runs much better when it's cool than when it's hot, but when you start approaching extreme winter temperatures, the weather can be just as harmful as in the summer. If you leave your device in the cold for too long, its battery will die and its LCD screen will likely start having issues, and possibly die completely. Furthermore, if you leave it in the cold and then bring it into a warm room quickly, you can cause condensation to build up inside the device, which has the potential for more long-term damage.

PC World found that?different gadgets can withstand different temperatures of cold, but to be conservative, we recommend taking precautions once the ambient temperature reaches freezing, or 32? Fahrenheit. Lower than that, and you'll slowly start to see different errors or issues until your gadget powers down altogether. When you can, keep your laptop in a case or bag and your smartphone in your pocket, to help shield it from the winds of winter.

Lastly, if for some reason you?do?expose your gadget to extreme temperatures, don't try to use it right away. Instead, let it warm up or cool down to room temperature before you turn it on. This will help protect your gadget from more lasting damage from things like condensation. In general, just use common sense: if your computer feels particularly cold or hot to the touch before it's even on, you probably shouldn't leave it alone in that weather.

Ghanaians show democratic mettle in cliff-hanger vote

ACCRA (Reuters) - Ghana electoral workers tallied final ballots on Saturday in a tight election troubled by delays and technical glitches, but which officials hope will burnish the country's reputation as a model democracy in Africa.

Incumbent President John Dramani Mahama was in a near-deadlock with rival Nana Akufo-Addo, according to early unofficial results, raising the prospect of a repeat of the close race in 2008 that pushed Ghana to the brink of chaos.

The elections have been plagued by delays after hundreds of electronic fingerprint readers - used to identify voters - failed on Friday and forced some polling stations to reopen on Saturday to clear the backlog.

"This election has been hard, but we must remember Ghanaians are one and we must love each other and remain peaceful," said Wellington Dadzie, 69, a former soldier who lives on the outskirts of the capital Accra.

Ghana's more than 30 years of peace and an oil-driven economic boom have earned it a reputation as a bulwark of stability and progress in West Africa, a region better known for civil wars, coups, and corruption.

Both presidential hopefuls were carrying just under 50 percent of the ballots, according to an unofficial tally compiled from more than half the country's polling stations and published late on Saturday by local media.

The General Secretary of Akufo-Addo's party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, held a late-night press conference claiming he had seen figures showing Akufo-Addo had won with 51 percent.

"We are not declaring results, but the figures we have seen as of this evening indicate that the wishes of those who supported the NPP have been fulfilled," he said, urging party faithful to wear all white on Sunday.

Deputy Information Minister James Agyenim-Boateng condemned the NPP statement as reckless and provocative. "It clearly violates the way we are supposed to do things," he said.

Ghana's election commission has yet to issue any results, but is expected to release figures Sunday or Monday.

U.S. President Barack Obama called Ghana a model democracy after it stepped away from the brink in 2008 polls, when initial disputes over the close results caused street protests.

Mahama replaced the late John Atta Mills after his death in July, and has promised to use the country's growing oil wealth to boost average income and jumpstart development in a country where the average person lives on $4 a day.

Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vowed to provide free education and root out graft.

But in a country where campaign messages rarely influence voting choices, many believe most of the 14 million voters will cast their ballots based on ethnic, social or regional ties.

Ghanaians are also electing a parliament, where Mahama's National Democratic Party has enjoyed a slim majority.

GLITCHES AND DELAYS

Hundreds of electronic fingerprint readers malfunctioned on Friday, causing some people who had waited hours to vote to burst into tears.

An election commission official said 1.6 percent of the country's 26,000 polling stations had to reopen on Saturday to clear the backlog, adding officials would launch an investigation into why the machines broke down.

The head of the West African ECOWAS observer mission, former Nigerian head of state Olesegun Obasanjo, said electoral workers had apparently failed to change the batteries on time - but added the glitches did not affect the legitimacy of the vote.

"There were hiccups, but these hiccups will not grossly undermine the results of the election," he said.

Ghana has had five peaceful and constitutional transfers of power since its last coup in 1981, in stark contrast to the turmoil that surrounds it in the region.

Neighbouring Ivory Coast tipped into civil war last year after a disputed 2010 poll and regional neighbors Mali and Guinea-Bissau have both suffered coups this year.

"These elections are important not just to Ghana but for the growing number of states and actors seeking to benefit from increasing confidence in Africa," said Alex Vines, Africa Research Director at Chatham House.

Akufo-Addo, a trained lawyer and son of a former Ghanaian president, has criticized the ruling party for not creating jobs and easing poverty fast enough, and says he would use oil money to pay for free primary and secondary education.

(AP) ? Software company founder John McAfee was hospitalized briefly Thursday after being denied political asylum in Guatemala, and his lawyers said they were making a last-ditch effort to keep him from being flown back to Belize for questioning about the killing of a fellow American expatriate.

McAfee told The Associated Press that he suffered chest pains overnight but didn't believe he had a heart attack. A government doctor who examined him agreed, saying that McAfee's heart rhythm and blood pressure were normal and that he appeared to be suffering from high stress.

McAfee was moved from an immigration center to a police-run hospital Thursday afternoon after Guatemalan authorities said McAfee's request for asylum had been denied. They did not explain why.

He was released from the hospital and taken back to the detention center Thursday night.

Shortly after the decision to deny him asylum was announced, McAfee issued a plea on his blog for the public to petition Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina to let him stay.

"Please email the President of Guatemala and beg him to allow the court system to proceed, to determine my status in Guatemala, and please support the political asylum that I am asking for," the post read.

McAfee's legal team said they were preparing to appeal the denial of asylum to the country's constitutional court, a process that could give McAfee perhaps another day or two in Guatemala. The court would have to issue a decision within 48 hours.

McAfee's complaints of chest pain prompted authorities to move him from the immigration center where he had been held overnight. He had been taken to the center after his arrest for illegally entering the country after a bizarre weekslong journey as a self-styled fugitive with an active blog and constant contact with the press.

During an exclusive interview with the AP Thursday morning from inside his private room at the center, McAfee said he was refusing to travel to a hospital because he had been using Chinese herbal medicine since suffering a heart attack in 1993.

"Last night I had a little bit of pain, but I am fine this morning," he said. "I don't like Western medicine ... if the people around me are kind and compassionate, that's all that matters in life. The people of Guatemala are very kind people, so I have no complaints."

A couple of hours later, an AP reporter returned to McAfee's room and found him changed into a suit but lying on the floor as he was examined by a doctor. Shortly after, he was taken to the police hospital.

Belizean police spokesman Raphael Martinez said officials expected McAfee to be flown back to his country's capital. Police want to question him about the fatal shooting of Gregory Viant Faull, who was shot to death in early November on the Belize island where both men lived.

There is no warrant for McAfee's arrest, so it is possible his self-initiated flight from Belizean authority could end up with him free to roam the Caribbean island where he lived for years, often clashing with neighbors and authorities over allegations he kept aggressive dogs, weapons and drug paraphernalia on his property.

The Faull family has said through a representative that the murder of their loved one on Ambergris Caye has gotten lost in the media frenzy provoked by McAfee's manipulation of the media through phone calls, emails and blog posts detailing his life on the lam.

McAfee updated his blog Thursday after being given a computer by the warden at the immigration center in Guatemala City, a three-story building with mesh-covered windows and barbed-wire on the roof.

McAfee said U.S. Embassy officials had said they couldn't help him with a request to be returned to the United States instead of Belize. McAfee said he had formally requested asylum in Guatemala because he fears for his safety in Belize because he has sensitive information about official corruption and refused to donate to local politicians.

His Guatemalan lawyer, Telesforo Guerra, warned Wednesday night that the 67-yeard-old McAfee's life would be in danger if he is sent back to Belize.

"He will be in danger if he is returned to Belize, where he has denounced authorities," Guerra said. "From the moment he asked for asylum he has to have the protection of the Guatemalan government."

Police in Belize deny they are persecuting McAfee and say there is no warrant for his arrest. The country's prime minister has questioned McAfee's mental state.

McAfee went on the run last month after officials tried to question him about the killing of Faull, who was shot to death in early November.

McAfee acknowledges that his dogs were bothersome and that Faull had complained about them, but denies killing Faull. Faull's home was a couple of houses down from McAfee's compound.

McAfee, the creator of the McAfee antivirus program, has led an eccentric life since he sold his stake in the anti-virus software company that is named after him in the early 1990s and moved to Belize about three years ago to lower his taxes.

He told The New York Times in 2009 that he had lost all but $4 million of his $100 million fortune in the U.S. financial crisis. However, a story on the Gizmodo website quoted him as calling that claim "not very accurate at all." He has dabbled in yoga, ultra-light aircraft and producing herbal medications.

Cannabis Is Now Legal In Washington State | NORML Blog ...

Cannabis Is Now Legal In Washington State --> by Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director December 6, 2012

History was made in Washington on Election night when 55 percent of voters decided in favor of Initiative 502. And at 12am this morning, history was made once again.

Today, for the first time in 89 years (Washington lawmakers initially outlawed cannabis in 1923, 14 years ahead of the enactment of federal prohibition.), an adult may possess up to one ounce cannabis (and/or up to 16 ounces of marijuana-infused product in solid form, and 72 ounces of marijuana-infused product in liquid form) for their own personal use in private ? and they may do so without being in violation of state law.

To be clear: This is not decriminalization ? a policy change that amends criminal penalties for minor marijuana offenses, but that continues to define cannabis as illegal contraband under the law and subjects its consumers to civil penalties. Today in Washington, cannabis ? when possessed in private by an adult in specific quantities ? is a legal commodity. (By contrast, public consumption of cannabis is a civil violation. Existing penalties regarding home cultivation for non-patients remain unchanged. Rules regarding the regulated sale of cannabis to adults are to be codified later next year.)

Nevertheless, the immediate statutory changes effective today provide unprecedented legal protections for adult cannabis consumers. Rather than presuming cannabis to be illicit, and that those who possess it are engaged in illegal activity, the enactment of I-502 mandates law enforcement and prosecutors to presume that cannabis is in fact legal, and that those who possess it in personal use quantities are engaged in legal activity, unless the state can show that there are extenuating circumstances proving otherwise. Moreover, since up to one ounce of cannabis will no longer be classified as an illicit commodity under state law, police will have no legal authority to seize it from lawful adults. Finally, police will arguably no longer be permitted to legally engage in ?fishing expeditions? when they encounter cannabis in ?plain view? ?- such as in someone?s home or in their car. Since marijuana is no longer defined as contraband, state police will no longer have sufficient cause to engage in a further search of the area because, legally, no criminal activity has taken place.

Yes indeed, the dominoes are falling and more will fall imminently. (Colorado?s legalization measure will take effect in early January.) And there is very little that the federal government ? which on the eve of legalization said only that it is ?reviewing? the new law ? can do to stop it. States are not mandated to criminalize marijuana or arrest adult cannabis consumers and the Federal government cannot compel prosecutors in Colorado or Washington to do otherwise.

Like alcohol prohibition before it, the criminalization of cannabis is a failed federal policy that delegates the burden of enforcement to the state and local police. How did America?s ?Nobel Experiment? with alcohol prohibition come to an end? When a sufficient number of states enacted legislation repealing the state?s alcohol laws prohibition effectively discontinued. With state police and prosecutors no longer enforcing the Federal government?s unpopular law, politicians eventually had no choice but to abandon the policy altogether.

History now repeats itself.

Rare Raphael drawing sells for record $48 million

By Mike Collett-White, Reuters

LONDON -- One of the greatest drawings by Renaissance master Raphael still in private hands sold for 29.7 million pounds ($47.9 million) on Wednesday, an auction record for the artist in sterling terms and double pre-sale expectations.

Carl Court / AFP - Getty Images

A drawing by Italian artist Raphael entitled "Head of an Apostle" is shown at Sotheby's auction house in London last month.

Sotheby's auctioneers had high hopes for the 16th century "Head of an Apostle," a study for Raphael's last painting "Transfiguration" which is on display at the Vatican Museum in Rome.

When the artist died in 1520, his body was laid out in state in his studio with the "Transfiguration" hanging at his head.

Measuring roughly 15 inches by 11 inches (38 cm by 28 cm), the picture drawn in black chalk went on a mini-world tour prior to the London auction in a bid to drum up interest from Asia as well as Europe and North America.

"If you are lucky, at some point in your career a work like this comes along," said Gregory Rubinstein, head of old master drawings at Sotheby's.

"A number of the world's greatest collectors stepped up tonight in recognition of the genius of Raphael and the extraordinary beauty of this drawing with its exceptional provenance."

According to Sotheby's, only two other Raphael drawings of the same calibre have been auctioned in the last 50 years?-- in 2009, Raphael's black chalk "Head of a Muse" sold for 29.2 million pounds at Christie's in London.

In dollar terms, that picture narrowly trumped "Head of an Apostle" due to fluctuating exchange rates, but since both were sold in pounds in London, Sotheby's is claiming the crown.

"Head of an Apostle" was from the collection at Chatsworth, the ancestral home of the 12th Duke of Devonshire who is also deputy chairman of Sotheby's. It is expected the proceeds of the sale will go towards the upkeep of the estate.

It was the last lot of the Old Master and British Paintings sale at Sotheby's which raised 58.1 million pounds overall.

The auction had been expected to total 35.6-52.9 million, although hammer prices include buyers' premiums meaning that the final tally was in line with the upper estimate.

The buyer was not identified, but the winning bid went to a member of Sotheby's staff who often represents Russian clients.

The sale extends a string of strong results by leading auction houses in recent months as wealthy collectors, including those from emerging markets like Russia, China and the Middle East, defy broader economic gloom to snap up rare treasures.

Dutch master Jan Steen's interior scene "The Prayer Before the Meal" dated 1660 sold for 5.6 million pounds, or at the lower end of expectations between 5.0 and 7.0 million.

The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles confirmed it had acquired "Roman de Gillion de Trazegnies," a 15th century illuminated manuscript from Flanders by Lieven van Lathem which sold for 3.8 million pounds.

There were disappointments on the night, however.

Philip the Good's finely illuminated copy of the drama "Mystere de la Vengeance" dated around 1465 had been expected to fetch 4.0-6.0 million pounds but failed to find a buyer.

Mr. McAfee, on the run for nearly a month since his neighbor in Belize turned up dead, was arrested Wednesday in Guatemala for crossing into the Central American country illegally. He is being held in a detention center with other migrants, authorities say.

Guatemalan authorities say he will be sent back to Belize, where he is wanted for questioning related to his neighbor's death. Fernando Lucero, spokesman for Guatemala?s immigration office, tells the Monitor that?the timetable for doing so was not clear.

?This is a matter in the hands of the courts,? Mr. Lucero says. ?At this time, we have no court order.?

For a man on the run, McAfee has been in the public spotlight frequently in recent days, granting interviews with television reporters and writing regularly on a blog WhoIsMcAfee.com. All the while, he was doing so from a concealed location.

Among those to reach him were video journalists from the magazine and website Vice who are planning an ?epic? documentary about the ordeal. But in promoting their access, the journalists accidentally revealed McAfee?s location.

In an update on the Vice website titled ?We are with John McAfee right now, suckers,? the journalists released an iPhone photo with metadata that included the exact coordinates of McAfee?s location. They were in Rio Dulce, a small town near Guatemala?s Caribbean coast not far from the Belize border.

After initially suggesting the co-ordinates were manipulated to hide his location, McAfee later wrote on his blog: ?Yesterday was chaotic due to the accidental release of my exact co-ordinates by an unseasoned technician at Vice headquarters.?

A day later, McAfee was in Guatemala City, where he was planning a press conference until he was arrested. On his blog, he wrote, ?I am in jail in Guatemala. Vastly superior to Belize jails. I asked for a computer and one magically appeared. The coffee is also excellent.?

It was an unexpected turn for McAfee, who amassed a fortune building software to prepare against security threats. (He sold the company in 1994.)

In hiding, McAfee has displayed a streak of paranoia fitting for a man who built a fortune in security. Belizean authorities have said he?s not a suspect in the murder of Gregory Faull, a neighbor on the small island of Amergris Caye who was found dead on Nov. 11. ?

Yet, McAfee has claimed Belizean authorities would kill him once in custody. He left the country, slipping through a porous border into a lightly populated area of Guatemala.

Mr. Faull had reportedly complained about McAfee?s rowdy lifestyle and his pack of dogs that occasionally bit passersby. On Nov. 9, four of the dogs died of poisoning. Two days later, Faull was shot in the head in his home.

McAfee has insisted he has nothing to do with the death and authorities have said they only want to question him. It looks like they?re about to get their chance.
