FYI: NFL Mobile finally working on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus

NFL Mobile on Galaxy Nexus

Good news, everyone! The NFL Mobile app is finally working correctly on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. The app actually got its update fix last night, but the login was still borked for a lot of people. (Or at least us, and we count double.) Anyhoo, all is well, you should be able to log in, and just in time for the playoffs. Huzzah.

December 26-30, 2011: Bloggers Close out 2011 with iPhone News

Bloggers last week shared news that iPad and iPhone shoppers accounted for 90% of all mobile purchases in December, according to a study by the ecommerce research firm, RichRelevance. The study also found that these shoppers spent 19% more than shoppers using Android devices.

"If people are buying through mobile online retail sites, they're most likely doing it on Apple devices," wrote Darrell Etherington of gigaom, one of many bloggers to comment on and share the story which ranked No.1 on blogs from December 26-30, according to the New Media Index from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism.

"Even though Android enjoys a healthy lead in overall global market share for smartphones versus the iPhone-no doubt a result of Android's ability to exist on multiple devices versus the single iOS smartphone product line-it seems that iOS users?continue to carry the day?for mobile shopping," wrote Powerhouse USA.

Some bloggers put the data in their own terms.

"In other words, 92% of 18% of a tiny sliver (3.74%) of total sales in the three weeks leading up to Christmas came from iOS devices. Not quite as impressive as the original headline suggested," wrote iPhone News.

Bloggers also discussed another ecommerce story last week. The No. 2 subject was a piece arguing that online price comparison sites are dying. According to the author, Paul Nikkel, "the golden days seem to be behind us as the old big names slump in traffic and value." He cites examples like Pricegrabber and Kelkoo as examples of such comparison sites that either slipped in traffic rankings or were sold.?

Charlie Stross at Anti Pope saw this as more evidence of significant changes in online retailing. "And what are the long-term implications if, in 10 years' time, the only way you can check the price of an item in a store is to point your camerphone at it-and the price will be tailored specifically to you and not available to anyone else?"* he wrote.

And while this story didn't delve into its potential impact on ecommerce, bloggers also shared news reported by the tech site BGR that Apple would launch a "completely redesigned iPhone in fall 2012." The article, which ranked No. 4 for the week, claims that the new phone will be made out of a rubber or plastic material with an aluminum backplate.

For months before the release of the iPhone 4S in October, bloggers speculated about its features and design-with many of the rumors proving untrue. This time, they took the news about the next incarnation with a grain of salt, not trusting Geller based on previous unfounded rumors he shared.

"Jonathan Geller?of BGR was wrong on?just about every rumor?leading up to the release of the iPhone 4S, so I've started to take his "sources" about as serious as I take users on?Yahoo Answers?when it comes to Apple rumors," wrote Eli Courey at Mac Daddy News, "With that being said, I do think a fall of 2012 release for the next iPhone would be a good guess."

"BGR?has a mixed track record when it comes to hardware rumors, coming relatively close on?Apple's late 2011 iPhone lineup?while?missing?with a claim of a redesigned WiMAX iPhone 5 exclusive to Sprint," wrote Eric Slivka at MacRumors.

"Of course, all of this is merely speculation at this point, as all Apple rumors are until the company actually decides to take the stage and announce something. So those of you hoping for a redesign shouldn't be excited just yet," wrote Adam Mills at Gotta Be Mobile.

Other News on Blogs

At No. 3 was a slide show from Mashable that showed how co-founders from popular startup companies met each other. The startups covered in the piece included Warby Parker, Rent the Runway, Foursquare, Sugar Inc., Spotify and several more. For example, the founders of DNA 11 met in kindergarten and two of the founders of Airbnb met when they became roommates through Craigslist.

In fifth place was discussion of the Asus Transformer Prime, a tablet deemed "fabulous" by Hubert Nguyen of Ubergizmo in his November review of the device. The Asus Transformer was the top story on blogs December 19-23 and December 5-9 and bloggers seemed to agree with the rave reviews.

Twitter

An array of popular singers dominated the conversation on Twitter last week, with a story about upcoming tech trends also causing a stir.

In first place was Super Junior, a Korean pop group, and one of its singers, Siwon Choi, who happens to tweet in English. The band was the No. 2 story on Twitter the week of August 29-September 2 when another member of the group, Heechul, enlisted in the South Korean army.

Discussion this past week revolved around the group having the first-ever album to rank No. 1 nine consecutive times on the Filipino charts and its fans not being informed in advance of a recording. Tweeters also heavily retweeted photos that Choi took.

At No. 2 on Twitter was perennial favorite Justin Bieber, including video of him performing Christmas songs at the Disney World Christmas Parade. In the YouTube video, Bieber sings Mistletoe and Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

An audio clip of a Lady Gaga song came in third place on Twitter and a humorous image of text conversation was the No. 4 most-discussed story on the social media outlet.

At No. 5 on Twitter for the week was a Mashable article about five tech trends to watch for in 2012.? Those trends included a micro-payment economy, where one makes money selling tiny items with incremental upgrades; an increased number of light, thin and powerful laptops; and what the article calls "social/digital exhaustion" or people reevaluating their social existence online and dropping off of Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for a variety of reasons.

The majority who retweeted the article did not opine on it, but those who did had a mixed response.

"No geek's talk required. Just relevant to most of us here," tweeted rudileung.

"Ok. Now I am officially - scared," wrote Luann Lee.

"Interesting --> Several will impact?#mrx" wrote John Tomas, referring to market research.

YouTube

The most popular news video last week was of the delivery man from hell who was caught on a surveillance camera throwing a computer monitor over a fence.

Uploaded on December 19, the clip shows a FedEx delivery man taking a package from the back of his van and tossing a computer monitor box over a gate onto the driveway. The video's uploader wrote in the description, "The sad part is that I was home at the time with the front door wide open. All he would have had to do was ring the bell on the gate. Now I have to return my monitor since it is broken."

FedEx released a statement saying that the company is "handling the employee according to our disciplinary policies."

The only difference in the top five news videos on YouTube last week was their ranking. The No. 1 video last week, the FedEx delivery man, was No. 2 the week of December 17-23. That pushed the footage from North Korean state media of people crying over the death of Kim Jong Il to the No. 2 spot, after it had been the most-viewed video one week earlier.

About the New Media Index

The New Media Index is a weekly report that captures the news agenda of social media, with a focus on blogs, Twitter and YouTube. These platforms are an important part of today's news information narrative and shape the way Americans interact with the news. The expansion of blogs and other social media sites has allowed news-consumers and others outside the mainstream press to have more of a role in agenda setting, dissemination and interpretation. Through this New Media Index PEJ aims to find out what subjects in the national news the online sites focus on, and how that compares with the narrative in the traditional press.

A detailed description of the NMI methodology, which was recently modified in August 2011, is available here. (For this week's NMI, Twitturly was down, so Tweetmeme was the sole source for Twitter stories.)

*For the sake of authenticity, PEJ has a policy of not correcting misspellings or grammatical errors that appear in direct quotes from online postings.

(AP) ? Mobilizing against Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney as too timid and too moderate, the rest of the GOP field is exhorting Republicans to do themselves a favor and nominate a more conservative standard-bearer who has a better chance of holding up against President Barack Obama.

"The only way Republicans lose is if we screw this up and nominate another moderate who has taken multiple positions on every major issue of our time," former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum told supporters in urgent fundraising appeal Friday.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was up early to continue the anti-Romney drumbeat, predicting on morning TV news shows that Romney can't win the nomination and saying that even if he did, his performance against Obama in the general election campaign debates would get little more than a laugh from the president.

Gingrich, speaking on ABC's "Good Morning America," said Romney would win New Hampshire but that one of the former Massachusetts governor's GOP rivals "will eventually emerge as the conservative alternative and will beat Romney."

Romney had harsh words of his own, but for Obama, whom he called a "crony capitalist" and "a job killer."

Romney was heavily favored to win Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, so much so that he was campaigning for a second day in South Carolina, where voters weren't due to cast primary ballots for two weeks. He was appearing Friday with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. John McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, two local favorites who have urged conservatives to support Romney as the GOP's nominee.

Santorum, who pulled within a handful of votes to place just behind Romney in Iowa's caucuses, was likely to find a welcome audience among South Carolina conservatives and so remained in New Hampshire to try to maintain the momentum he earned from Iowa. Jon Huntsman, who bypassed Iowa to bet his campaign on a good finish in New Hampshire, was showing off an endorsement by The Boston Globe, Romney's hometown paper.

"Don't settle for less than America needs," Santorum asked those expected to vote in New Hampshire's first-in-the nation primary. Without saying so Thursday, he and the other candidates appeared to share a common objective ? hold down Romney's vote totals in New Hampshire, then knock him off stride in the first Southern primary of the year.

Romney benefited handsomely from having several rivals split the vote in Iowa, where his winner's share was roughly 25 percent.

On Friday, he picked up the endorsement of conservative leader Bay Buchanan, whose brother Pat won the New Hampshire primary in 1996. Bay Buchanan cast Romney as a "real conservative" who could get things done.

Also vying to emerge as Romney's chief rival were Texans Ron Paul and Rick Perry.

"We can't afford to have a status quo president," Huntsman said in Durham, N.H. "We can't afford to have a coronation for president."

Huntsman made hay out of winning the Globe's endorsement. It was the second time Massachusetts' largest newspaper had snubbed Romney ahead of the New Hampshire primary.

Gingrich unveiled a new television commercial aimed at voters in New Hampshire and South Carolina that cited one review of Romney's jobs program as timid and nearly identical in part to the president's.

"Timid won't create jobs. And timid certainly won't defeat Barack Obama," the ad said.

Ironically, in a year in which polls show the economy is overwhelmingly the top issue for voters, the first two contests are in states with low joblessness ? 5.7 percent in Iowa and 5.4 percent in New Hampshire.

That all changes a week later.

South Carolina's unemployment was 9.9 percent in November, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, worse than 41 other states and more than a full percentage point higher than the national average.

Santorum managed to criticize Romney and most of the other Republicans in the race in the space of a few sentences.

"I've never been for government-run health care," he said in a swipe at both Romney and Gingrich. "I'm not for no regulation, I'm not a libertarian," he added, a jab at Paul.

Yet he also fielded pointed questions from his audiences ? something that he said happened regularly in Iowa, when he campaigned with little or no media coverage for months.

In Tilton he was pressed for his views on gun control, given his endorsement in an earlier campaign for former Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, who favored restrictions. Santorum responded that he is committed to the rights of gun owners.

Later, in an appearance before college students in Concord, he was asked about his opposition to same-sex marriage, which is legal in New Hampshire. "So anyone can marry anyone else?" Santorum said, swiftly turning the conversation to polygamy. "So anyone can marry several people?"

The crowd objected and tried to talk over him.

"Stop. This is not participatory. We're not going to do this. I'm going to ask the question," Santorum said, growing testy.

Santorum's aides say he had raised $2 million on the strength of his Iowa showing. The campaign sought to show momentum by announcing the support of a New Hampshire tea party leader and Catholicvote.org, an online organization, as well as another state senator and the chair of the conservative think tank Cornerstone.

Gingrich sought to set a high bar for Romney. "It's probably one of his three best states, but we'll see whether he gets a majority here," he said.

In the ebb and flow of the campaign, one-time national front-runner Gingrich was hoping to reverse a slide that landed him in fourth place in Iowa.

Paul was absent, after a third-place finish in Iowa. He is scheduled to arrive in New Hampshire on Friday, in time to campaign and participate in a pair of weekend debates.

Perry, who finished fifth in Iowa, is bypassing New Hampshire to try and resurrect his chances in South Carolina. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann dropped out after a last-place showing in Iowa.

China calls on Europe for talks over carbon charge (AP)

BEIJING ? China called on the European Union on Thursday to heed objections to its plans to charge airlines for carbon emissions and to hold talks with opponents.

The charges, which took effect Sunday, are aimed at curbing emissions of climate-changing gases but airlines oppose them as an improper tax. The ratings agency Fitch warned last month the conflict could spiral into a global trade dispute.

"China opposes the EU forcing through unilateral legislation," said a foreign ministry spokesman, Hong Lei. "We hope the EU side will be prudent and practical and deal with this issue through consultations with all relevant parties."

The appeal came even after a European court last month rejected a lawsuit brought by U.S. airlines and supported by governments including China and India.

Beijing could have unusually strong leverage in a possible dispute because its state-owned airlines carry large numbers of Chinese and other Asian tourists to Europe. Any disruption would hurt Europe's travel industry when the continent is struggling with a debt crisis and high unemployment.

Under the European system, airlines flying to or from Europe must obtain certificates for carbon dioxide emissions. They will get free credits to cover most flights this year but must buy or trade for credits to cover the rest.

Last month's ruling by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg dismissed arguments that the system infringes national sovereignty or violates aviation treaties.

Environmentalists welcomed the program, one of the most far-reaching measures adopted by any government to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Although only 3 percent of total human-caused carbon emissions come from aircraft, aviation is the fastest-growing source of carbon pollution.

The European Union has said the added costs would amount to a few dollars per ticket and would open the way for efficient airlines to make money rather than lose it.

Already this week, Delta Air Lines Inc. added a $6 charge per round trip on tickets sold in the U.S. for travel to Europe and Deutsche Lufthansa AG said it will raise prices but not right away.

Fitch Ratings warned last month that possible retaliation "will pose growing threats to aviation market access" in both developed and emerging markets. It said that might affect authorizations for routes and landing slots.

Chinese airlines have not decided whether to add a ticket surcharge, said Chai Haibo, deputy secretary-general of China Air Transport Association, an industry group.

Asked whether Chinese carriers might refuse to pay the charges, Chai said, "It has not come to that stage yet."

A trade group for U.S. carriers, Airlines for America, has said its members would comply "under protest," while reviewing legal options.

Warner Bros. pushing movie delays from 28 to 56 days for Netflix, Redbox and Blockbuster?

While HBO is reportedly not supplying DVDs directly to its rival Netflix, Warner Bros. is apparently flexing its muscle by working out agreements that will keep new release movies away from Blockbuster, Netflix and Redbox renters. This news comes from anonymous sources dropping a dime in the ear of AllThingsD's Peter Kafka, who reports the arrangements will be announced at CES, not long after Warner extended the window for Blockbuster to match the other two. This news comes at the same time Time Warner's CFO John Martin remarked upon "alternate" distribution channels as a way for it to move through a more challenging home video market. That means the company is focusing on things like day-and-date VOD releases with disc which it's seeking to protect from competition by cut-rate rental services like these three, likely by leveraging their desire for content to feed streaming movie offerings. According to Home Media Magazine, he believes the industry has "got to embrace these higher margin opportunities" -- which is probably going to leave just the older flicks in its 7,000 movie deep library for the rest of us trying to watch via subscription or $1~ rentals.

UK man in court over killing of Indian student (AP)

LONDON ? A 20-year-old British man charged with the murder of an Indian student said during a court appearance Monday that his name was "Psycho."

Kiaran Stapleton was charged with shooting 23-year-old Anuj Bidve on Dec. 26 in a seemingly unprovoked attack in the northern city of Salford. Police are investigating whether the crime was racially motivated.

Stapleton appeared at the City of Manchester Magistrates Court. When asked to state his name, he said, "Psycho. Psycho Stapleton."

Prosecutor Ben Southam said Stapleton will be held in custody for 24 hours and sent to Manchester Crown Court, which deals with murder cases.

Bidve was from the western Indian city of Pune and enrolled in a postgraduate course in microelectronics at Lancaster University in northern England. He was on a holiday break with a group of nine friends when he was shot. He had arrived in Britain just three months ago.

Two Greater Manchester Police officers have flown to India to meet with Bidve's family.

His father, Subhash Bidve, has criticized how British and Indian authorities have handled the case. He found out about his son's death on Facebook before U.K. police could contact him.

A candlelight memorial service for Bidve is set for Monday evening in the street where he was shot, while a peace march has been organized in India, starting near Nehru Park in New Delhi and finishing at the British Embassy.
