Retail Sales Flat Last Month - Business News - ABC News Radio
Stockbyte/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- Retail sales were flat last month in the latest sign of a weak economy.
The U.S. Commerce Department says retail sales showed no growth at all for August. With a drop in consumer confidence, Americans spent less on cars, clothing and furniture, but did show some growth in back to school spending. Electronics and appliance, sporting goods, grocery, building material and non-store retailers all posted gains.
The Commerce Department also reports that food services sales remained virtually unchanged from the previous month.
Retail sales are typically an important indicator of consumer spending and a major driver of economic growth.
